Live updates:

Two people in custody, early reports say multiple fatalities. It appears to have been a deliberate and targeted attack on Chanukah festivities.

Ten people dead, including one of the shooters, per BBC News - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/ckgk391yzm7t.

Police at the scene have confirmed that 10 people have died in the shooting, including one gunman. The other gunman is in police custody and injured.

At least 12 other people have been injured, police say, and two police officers were also shot and injured during the incident

Earlier reporting said that two shooters were in custody, now it seems that one has been killed.

A timely reminder that early reports should be assumed to have some details wrong.

Shocking, especially in a country with such strict gun control.

Too early to say if this was the target, but seems plausible

An event celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukkah was taking place on the beach at the time of the shooting.
The co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (Ecaj), Alex Ryvchin, said the organisation’s director of media had been injured in the incident.

If there is ten dead there is going to be a lot of wounded people. This is a huge story for Australia I believe the Australian public are going to demand anyone even remotely associated with this will be bought to justice.

I’m watching it now on abc news 24……

Looks virtually certain this is an attack targeting the Jewish community Hanukkah gathering. Eye witness reports of the gunmen yelling religious chants. The prime minister has made particular mention of the government wanting the Jewish community to know they are going to receive maximum possible support.

People chanting to gods while shooting people……makes me sick. Hopefully Australians will understand that people who do this don’t represent anyone but their own vile extremist cliques.

One distasteful event associated with such a tragedy is the glee shown by the American gun community whenever a mass shooting occurs in another country. You can see this playing out in the comments section of the Fox News report -- but I recommend you don't.

One of the first things I saw on Twitter was someone lamenting that the government had disarmed Australians leaving them unable to defend themselves against this. I dread to think what would have happened if there had been a bunch of gun-toting men on that beach as well as the terrorists. Also, no consideration of all the things that didn't happen at all because of the gun ban.

This video shows almost the entire shooting - it goes on for about 10 minutes, but of course it seems much longer. Fortunately it doesn't show what they were shooting at.

Watching that I am surprised that some innocent people didn't get killed by the police, the police can't know who might be accomplices, being close to the shooters and their weapons would seem good grounds for being ordered to the ground and handcuffed.

Gun laws in Australia are some of the strictest in the world.

The shooting tonight in Bondi shows very clearly that no matter the case, if bad people want to obtain a gun, they will.

The problem Australians face is we’re not allowed to be armed to defend ourselves…

That's going to be a different kind of episode of Bondi Rescue.

As long as nobody's surprised by the attack - it was bloody obvious from the moment Israel turned from Hamas-hunt to genocide that there will be terrorist attacks against Jews across the world, and this just the latest.

Australia can consider itself very lucky to have both the gun laws they do and really stupid terrorists - if the pair of gunmen had had the kind of weapons used by Brenton Tarrant, Anders Breivik, Stephen Paddock, et al, we'd be looking at hundreds dead.
