Mass shooting at California garlic festival

The three victims killed during the mass shooting are a 13-year-old girl, a 6-year-old boy, and a man in his 20's.

"AK-47" type rifle, identified as an SKS. They are not in any way identical past the cartridge used.
While the AK is popularly know as a weapon of terror, in some parts of the USA, the SKS is a legitimate hunting rifle; fixed mag, no threaded muzzle, conventional stock etc.

Doesn't matter now, police chief said AK-47, so that's what all the reports will state.

As you say, the SKS is not an AK-47, and is different in many legally significant ways. The SKS is older technology and was never even banned during the Assault Weapon Ban days, because it is a fairly ordinary semi-auto rifle.

No removable magazine, limited to 10 rounds, relatively slow to reload, no pistol grip, no adjustable stock. It's an obsolete military rifle from the post-WWII period, similar in functionality and features of the US M1 Garand, which most consider more of a collectible than a practical modern weapon.

I expect any call for gun bans after this shooting will be especially disadvantaged, as this weapon is not an assault weapon by anyone's definition, and banning this gun (unless banned explicitly by name) would require banning features used in most modern firearms, namely semi-auto action. I could see a further push to raise minimum buying age to 21 being successful in some states.

On AK's v the SKS

No interchangeable parts between the the two. The only commonality is the standard combloc 7.62 x 39 cartridge.

There are detachable magazine versions out there - the Chinese even manufactured a specific version intended for GI use using a dedicated 20 round detachable mag - not interchangeable with the AK type mag.

I've had just about every such variation in hand and none of the detachable mag examples would run w/o failures to feed. The aftermarket conversions using AK type mags were the worst offenders.

Yeah, what the hell happened to all the talk about dealing with gun violence? That is not an issue that gets any air time in the debates. Well, it might now -- or they're saving it for the dual-party debate.

There was just another incident in Wisconsin. I am strongly affected by each of these incidents and I don't know what else if anything I can do about it. (Note: I'm not just talking about posting on the net as an action, but I choose not to go into details here.)

Why would this shooting make a difference?

9 Killed, 39 Wounded In Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

Two men and a woman were wounded when a man walked up to them and started shooting near 130th and Evans, according to police.

There's even a color coded map so we don't get all the different shootings confused.

About two hours earlier, four people were wounded in a shooting in the Lawndale neighborhood. Police said the victims were standing on the sidewalk at a gas station near Roosevelt and Pulaski, when someone walked up and started shooting.

Around 6:10 p.m. Sunday, three boys were shot in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. Police said they were standing on the sidewalk, when someone drove up in a red Toyota Corolla, and opened fire. A 15-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy, and a 10-year-old boy all suffered graze

wounds

Shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday, a 24-year-old man was found dead in the North Lawndale neighborhood. Officers responding to a Shot Spotter alert found the man near the corner of Douglas Boulevard and Kedzie Avenue, with multiple gunshot wounds, including to his face and head.

At least seven other people were killed in shootings from Friday afternoon through early Monday.

But ya, let's talk about how white supremacists are killing people - I believe I quoted last week that it's at about 50 deaths per year (same as lightning strikes).

Meanwhile, 9 were killed, 39 wounded in Chicago in one weekend. White supremacists with MAGA hats and clothesline again (because we all know where this thread is headed)?

We always try and blame some group when the biggest common factor is that a gun was used.

Body armor, that's the answer. The new sunrise industry. Attractively designed body armor and helmets for daily wear ... because you never know where next ...

Are you seriously defending White Supremacists because they don't shoot as many people as get shot in Chicago?

Guns aren't the problem. The problem is behind you at the movie theater, talking way too loud.

Why doesn't the MSM report all of the Antifa-related homicides? Or the scores of Americans undoubtedly killed by Islamic terrorists in the past week?

Local press confrence just ended.

Gilroy Chief announced the shooters name - reluctantly - as he didn't want to grant notoriety to the actor.

Three officers were involved in an exchange of gunfire within one minute of the initiation of the incident. The officers were not injured.

It's like calling a Garand an "M_16" type rifle.

Because there aren't any. You have to invent special non-standard definitions for what qualifies as "antifa" in order to create them.

More of an M-14 type rifle, but who cares?

You've been Cained, and not one of his better efforts, either.

I live 15 miles from there and I've never gone to the event. Too many gang problems and stabbings in years past. Tried to look up stats but all the results I get are about today so whatever, I'm lazy. Maybe it's not so bad, but that's always been my impression, put it that way. Lot of gang activity in Gilroy, has been for decades.

We just had a shooting in my town a few weeks ago at a Ford dealership - disgruntled employee. Just up the Freeway from Gilroy and a 3 miles from me.

I get more details from the Daily Mail than from all of our local papers, including the San Jose Mercury, combined.

The Garlic Festival is an official Gun Free Zone by the way, so this shouldn't have happened at all!

Well - waiting for the next shooting I guess.
Shooter bought the gun in NV because he couldn't buy it in CA. And there was a lot of security at the event which were able to stop him within a minute of the shooting starting.

The point of gun free zones is to stop hot-headed arguments from turning into tragedies. It's nonsense to say they aren't useful because they don't stop mass shooters.

The LA Times is reporting that the rifle was a WASR-10 - an AK variant:

The gunman in the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting used a military-style semiautomatic rifle that is illegal to own in California, authorities said Monday.

The WASR-10, with its standard clip and stocks, is considered an assault rifle under California law and therefore banned. The Romanian-built weapon looks like an AK-47.

The SF Chronicle is apparently the origin of that claim, but it is behind a paywall.

Grind your axe a little harder over there, Joe, most people aren't 'having an opinion' until MORE FACTS ARE IN.
This.

My first thought though was white supremacist because 1) I saw something a day or so ago that said all the terrorists acting in the US so far this year have been white supremacists. Or maybe they said majority of attacks. And 2) there have always been a lot of Hispanics in that area. Trump and his constant attacks on Hispanic immigrants contributes to this.
