Trump's US Threat to Greenland (which belongs to Denmark)

The U.S. has wanted to acquire Greenland from Denmark since the 19th Century. The administrations of A. Johnson, Taft, Truman, and Eisenhower all approached Denmark with offers to acquire the island, so it is nothing new. The U.S. has a space base in Greenland, but that's it, as far as I know. Acquiring the island would allow for expansion of strategic defense operations there as well as access the island's mineral resources.
It used to be Thule Air Base where there was almost a nuclear accident in a B-52. The book Command and Control has an interesting account of it.

So it is not as if the US needs to actually invade the country to have access to it.

We have already had theories put forward by some people here that the whole thing is a negotiation tactic, but that is looking less and less likely as there is nothing that Trump and his gargoyle, Stephen Miller, seem to accept as enough to appease them.

How exactly is or was Denmark supposed to "use" Greenland?
They are supposed to steal all it's resources

When you put it that way, help yourself.

USA already can have military bases there and American companies can apply for mineral extraction licenses etc.

What is the actual problem?

Where next after Greenland?

How about Iceland or Norway?

Well, there's exploiting its minerals, but that's really hard in Greenland, because it's Greenland.

As explained by IvanV over on the Scrutable forum
... because it's among the highest cost locations on the planet to try to operate in. Typically you are looking at sites with no infrastructure, no worthwhile local labour force, and horrible weather. And operators will suffer European level monitoring in terms of their labour conditions and environmental effects.

You could dig up all kinds of stuff in Greenland, but you could probably only make a profit if it was governed by people who didn't care about pollution as much as its current government do.

Surely there are no civilised governments that would consider abandoning such sensible restrictions if they had control of the territory?

Statement from the Premier of Greenland.

January 6, 2026

“Yesterday, I made it very clear that in Greenland we have intensified our diplomatic and political efforts in our struggle to affirm that Greenland is our country and our territory. Our country is not something that can be annexed or taken over simply because someone wishes to do so. I am pleased that already today I can note that the relationships we have built over the past year, and our increased diplomatic efforts in recent times, are of great significance.

The French President, the German Federal Chancellor, the Italian Prime Minister, the Polish Prime Minister, the Spanish Prime Minister, the British Prime Minister, and the Danish Prime Minister have today issued a joint statement that unequivocally supports us in Greenland and our shared territorial integrity. This support is important at a time when fundamental international principles are being challenged. For this support, I wish to express my deepest gratitude.

At a time when the President of the United States has once again stated that the United States is very serious about Greenland, this support from our allies in NATO is both important and unequivocal.

I once again call on the United States to seek a respectful dialogue through the appropriate diplomatic and political channels, and through the use of existing forums based on agreements that already exist with the United States. Such dialogue must take place with respect for the fact that Greenland’s status is grounded in international law and the principle of territorial integrity.

In this context, the support from our European allies in NATO means a great deal. It is a clear signal that territorial integrity, sovereignty, and international rules continue to apply and are respected

Greenland envoy Gov. Jeff Landry: "Solidifying the Western Hemisphere is good for the United States and good for the states that are in the United States, like Louisiana. And Greenland is in the Western Hemisphere."
Solidifying.

Yeah, like the house two doors down, which had their new BMW solidified overnight by a couple of car solidifiers.

Greenland envoy Gov. Jeff Landry: "Solidifying the Western Hemisphere is good for the United States and good for the states that are in the United States, like Louisiana. And Greenland is in the Western Hemisphere."

Wow lucky Greenlanders. If they play their cards right, they too could have massive inequality and even debtors prisons like the backward state of Louisiana.

"Good for the United States and good for the states that are in the United States" - he certainly has a way with words. Or he has his way with words, rather, whether they want him too or not.
KERNEN: Europeans are talking about it almost being like Vladimir Putin and Ukraine.

JEFF LANDRY: I disagree. When has the United States engaged in imperialism? Never. Europe has engaged in imperialism. The reason the Danish have Greenland is because of imperialism.

Only the best people. Hey Jeff, the reason the USA has the USA is imperialism.

If the US makes a move on Greenland, Denmark should invoke article 5 and then Lakenheath, Mildenhall Ramstein, the US Headquarters in Wiesbaden and the entire Kaiserslautern Military Community should be seized and all the US personnel made prisoners of war.

🚨 JUST IN: GREENLAND and DENMARK have requested a meeting with Secretary Rubio

Trump said:
"Right now Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships..."
Right now this is the nearest thing the US has to a president. Heaven help the world.
