It used to be Thule Air Base where there was almost a nuclear accident in a B-52. The book Command and Control has an interesting account of it.The U.S. has wanted to acquire Greenland from Denmark since the 19th Century. The administrations of A. Johnson, Taft, Truman, and Eisenhower all approached Denmark with offers to acquire the island, so it is nothing new. The U.S. has a space base in Greenland, but that's it, as far as I know. Acquiring the island would allow for expansion of strategic defense operations there as well as access the island's mineral resources.
So it is not as if the US needs to actually invade the country to have access to it.
We have already had theories put forward by some people here that the whole thing is a negotiation tactic, but that is looking less and less likely as there is nothing that Trump and his gargoyle, Stephen Miller, seem to accept as enough to appease them.
