UK - Train firm apologise for "ladies and gentlemen" announcement

LNER has been owned by the Department for Transport for three years, so this is essentially Boris Johnson making the apology.

However, it still has a train on the Edinburgh-London route named "The Flying Scotsman", how non-inclusive is that FFS?

You think they should rename it "The Flying Scotsperson"?

No, you and the other people who are working so very hard to try to be offended about this.

Nah.

Think he means the passenger.

Assuming the person identifies as a passenger and not "non-body movement stasus"....and identifies as a person and not "non definable object"

Yup, that's the stuff. Also serves as a fair indication of exactly how prone to knee-jerk reactions you are, too.

Is this yet another of those thread where a bunch of 'skeptics' rail against a thing that they demonstrate they don't even understand while simultaneously claiming that it's a stupid thing to get annoyed about and they don't care about the *insert whatever epithet applies to the particular group that has annoyed them today by asking to treated as if they matter* anyway?

Cos we need more of them.

Right. Can you please explain how you “understand” this topic while others who disagree with you don’t?

This is a very very very telling thing to say. It shows you don't understand even the basics of a pisstake when you see one.

Pisstakes need to have some connection to reality otherwise they aren't pisstakes.

Is this another one of those 'right wing comedy fails' where they think shouting something offensive is a funny joke?

Or was it a subtle lampooning of the kind of idiots who would say such a stupid thing? That may actually have been clever.

Sorry, but it just looked like a clear and obvious pisstake to me.

Maybe its a cultural thing, The Atheist, cullennz and I are all kiwis... our senses of humour are probably quite different from yours.

Mine's warped I know; I can see the humour in dark and sometimes offensive things... I don't know about cullennz but I'm sure The Atheist and I at least have this in common.

Oh, and 'right wing comedy'? Really? That's really hilarious. You don't know The Atheist or I very well at all.

One crucial point has been missed in all this palaver: the news report in the OP was from The Sun.

Do we know it was actually true? Has it been confirmed by some proper source?

I am the same really.

Hence the stupid do they identify as a person jokes

Maybe you missed my point. Saying something offensive linked to the case could very well be a pisstake but saying something offensive that isn't linked to the case isn't a pisstake of the case at all.

Had he said 'just goes to show that Jews are tight with money' it would have been equally relevant and offensive but would still have left me confused as to whether he understood what the story was about.

and yes 'blurting out offensive non-sequiturs as if you have discovered a massive gotcha' is very much a trademark of right-wing comedy. Which is why it's generally not funny to anyone other than idiots. Because it just leaves you thinking 'that doesn't make any sense, you don't know what you are talking about' while the idiots think 'hahaha yeah jews ARE greedy hahaha'

Far out.

I think that I will personally put that one down to a smartcocky being right with the humour thing.

BTW. Your pretending to understand right/left wing comedy like comedy has to have to sides and loads of comedians don't do a mix is ridiculous.

Simple recognition (or, more accurately, not being excluded) in something like a train announcement is hardly "restitution", it's just a simple awareness of reality.

But should they recognise all subgroups no matter how small?

"Ladies and gentlemen and nonbinaries and transmen and transwomen and asexuals and intersex, left-handed guitarists and ginger fashion designers..."

I don't have a problem with shorthands that aren't literally 100% inclusive. But fine, use "gentlepeople"... or maybe "goodfellas".

Non-binary people exist.

Do they, though? The concept increasingly gets attention but I'm not sure it makes sense to begin with.

There are two kinds of people in this world:

1.) People who understand binary.

You messed that one up. It's "there are 10 kinds of people in this world: those who understand binary and those who don't."

In 1787, many American Congressmen questioned the premise that black slaves were "people" for governmental purposes.

Other people questioned X, and their opinion is no longer mainstream. Ergo you questioning Y will also become wrong.

See the problem?

However, non-binary is a gender identity, not a proposed disorder whose existence or non-existence is a matter of debate within the field of psychiatry.

But gender identity doesn't really mean anything, either, unless it's tied down to something objective. As discussed in the other thread, I have no idea how other men or women "feel", so I can't say whether I feel like any of them. That's why body dysphoria has to be a requisite.

For what it's worth, the complainants did not claim to be "offended". They merely reported that it made them uncomfortable.

Lots of **** makes me uncomfortable. Seeing people repeat 2000 year old religious nonsense like robots makes me uncomfortable, but I don't demand they close down churches.

There are people who are physically non-binary.

Actually, no.

No. Let's accept that the current expert opinion and guidance is the only appropriate framework for making policy decisions (including decisions made by rail operators wrt nonbinary people).

Except that the experts aren't actually saying what you claim.
