UK - Train firm apologise for "ladies and gentlemen" announcement

Let's revisit this topic in a generation and see.

No. Let's accept that the current expert opinion and guidance is the only appropriate framework for making policy decisions (including decisions made by rail operators wrt nonbinary people).

It's frankly ludicrous to take a position along the lines of "I (not an expert) simply don't believe that the World's experts are correct in their current assessment, and I predict that the World's experts will "come to their senses" within a generation; therefore (seemingly) it's entirely reasonable to state that no official body in 2021 should be "pandering" to the "whims" of nonbinary people"

Finally!

Confirmation that trans women are not women. Good work, LNER!

Huh? How have you drawn that particular inference?

(We're talking about nonbinary people here; and specifically those nonbinary people who prefer not to be gendered at all - but instead wish to be addressed as "they/them")

What's ludicrous is your assumption that the world's experts are even remotely unanimous on this issue. Even if it were to be proven to be a real condition, you'd have to be a real **** to be offended at not being included in "ladies and gentlemen".

All this anguish over seeing others included while maintaining such incredulity at those being discluded having anything to get upset about...

Oh, it's a ********.

Well, it's usually - as here - predicated on an (inexpert) belief that there's zero validity to a nonbinary gender identity. That people who identify as such are either playing games or deluded. And then on to the next step: authority bodies must not be "hoodwinked" into "pandering" to these game-playing or deluded individuals.

Fortunately, these sorts of reactionary beliefs are gradually dying out as a function of the diminution/dwindling/irrelevance of the age cohort which most typically holds those beliefs. By contrast, a source of real optimism is that (in the UK at least) people in the 16-30 age bracket are comparatively far better educated and well-informed. They predominantly accept and welcome those with a gender-fluid identity. And of course this cohort will, in the not too distant future, become our leaders, legislators, judges and regulators.

Yes, you've made your position on this subject very clear.....

(I wonder if, in your world, the rail operator should have tweeted back something like "Thank you for your message, Laurence. However, our view is that you must be a real **** to have been offended at not being included in "ladies and gentlemen". We suggest you snap out of your stupid, self-obsessed portrayal of yourself as the "victim" here. And, just so you know, we'll not be doing anything other than using the term "ladies and gentlemen" in our on-train announcements. If you don't like that, you're welcome to either walk or piss off.")

The world would be a happier place if people could derive self-esteem through accomplishment rather than through being the top victim in the oppression pyramid.

For what it's worth, the complainants did not claim to be "offended". They merely reported that it made them uncomfortable.

Asked and answered.

They're not women, they're binary.

I'm cool with that, and it means they are 100% not women, because women identify as women, not "binary", as J K Rowling so succinctly noted as per the other thread.

I might ask if we can add these posts to it.

Naysayers must admit that "ladies and gentlemen" is an archaic saying, really.

About time it was replaced by something less old and mouldy.

In 1787, many American Congressmen questioned the premise that black slaves were "people" for governmental purposes. They eventually decided that it would be okay to consider them three-fifths of a person.

Comparing slavery to some person uber offended their made up trendy personal feelings weren't included on a public tannoy in front of hundreds of complete strangers, who don't and probably don't particularly want to know them.

That is a new level of odd, even for here.

:boggled:

Hey Chicks and Dudes...and especially you Hot Chicks!...... The next service on Platform 4 will be....."
