General UK politics VII -Return of the Starmer

I recall May doing so badly in her election that we wondered whether she was just deliberately scuppering it for some (Brexit) reason. But then Corbyn effectively said "hold my beer".
The other day I had the funny feeling that this time, it's the tories who are desperately promising everything under the sun while Labour are keeping it pretty simple.

Corbyn did quite well to snatch defeat from the jaws of defeat. May started out with a healthy lead in the polls and a lot of my Labour supporting friends were celebrating that he only lost by a bit.

My problem with Corbyn at the time was that the May government seemed utterly unable to deal with Brexit and yet she still had enough of a lead in the polls to call an election when she didn't need to.

Lots of gammons and Tory MPs posting their outrage that French customs officers checked the passports of the parachutists that landed in Normandy as part of the commemorations.

Remember, the same sort of people were shocked to discover that after Brexit the UK no longer had a say in EU policy.

In the "That doesn't make any sense"-category, we now find Rish!'s excuse for not attending the international leaders' D-day event. He told Sky News that it had always been the plan to leave that bit to David Cameron, also before he called the general election, which makes even less sense, as any leader would be scrambling to join in such a photo op.

Reform are saying their support is growing so quickly that Nigel could be the next Prime Minister.
Look out Labour, they have smashed the Tory vote and they are coming for yours.
There's no such thing as a safe Labour seat any longer apparently.

Aaaah, so that's what happened to all my optimism: those bastards stole it!

Tories have sent out out Johnny Mercenary to tell all the angry veterans and daily mail readers off, calling everyone 'nauseating' for their 'faux outrage' over Rishi leaving the D-Day commemorations early.
I hope the malignant **** loses his seat in Plymouth.

Sunak now saying he stuck to a prearranged itinerary:
Asked directly by the media “Did you or anyone around you ever consider skipping the events” in Normandy.

Sunak said “That’s simply not right. The itinerary for these events was set weeks ago, before the general election campaign.”

He told Sky News “I stuck to the intinerary.”

ETA: From elsewhere on that page:
And then being questioned about it by the media saw Sunak at one point be asked “you seem more exasperated than apologetic” as he stuck to pre-prepared lines and appeared at his most tetchy about having to engage with criticism.

"I AM NOT TETCHY!"

Sounds to me like he was always planning to bug out of the D day events half way through. That's why he had a free afternoon he could fit the interview into.

It actually looks as though he initially intended to completely sub the event even before he decided to call the election and it was a compromise with Macron that he attended at all. Which is mindbogglingly bad optics.

I'm old enough to (vaguely) remember Michael Foot getting slammed for wearing a coat on Remembrance Sunday

I'm definitely old enough to remember it. Apparently the coat can still be seen:

From Michael Foot’s ‘donkey jacket’ to Barnard Castle beer … inside the People’s History Museum

Derided by the rightwing press as a “donkey jacket” more suitable for a building site than a site of national mourning, the dark brown tweedy number was in fact bought by Foot’s wife from Harrods especially for the occasion. But the press – then, as now, largely owned by wealthy supporters of the Conservative party – portrayed it as deliberate disrespect for the nation’s war dead from the pacifist Foot. Visitors are invited to conclude that Donald Trump did not invent the concept of “fake news”.

Its utter idiocy, the D-Day commemoration should have been marked on the PMs calendar a year or more back as a day when no other business was to be scheduled. Its not even like he was trying to pull a fast one with some high profile campaigning back home, it was for an interview that won't even be broadcast for a week! For that matter why record an interview that far in advance when you what you have to say might be completely irrelevant by then and will just remind everyone this is what he ducked out of Normandy for?

Apparently If all the Red Wall voters who voted for Boris to get Brexit done now voted Reform, and all the disillusioned Tories now voted Reform, Nigel would be PM on 5 July.
