General UK politics VII -Return of the Starmer

I don’t get it. They’ve decided to keep the tax lie rolling even though it’s being called out as a lie by everyone including The Spectator. Who’s responsible for the campaign management?

They're doing it because the people they are targeting have no idea that everyone and their dog has debunked the claim.

Millions of children are going hungry, but have the Tories come up with another plan to make rich people even richer? Of course they have

The key thing is to prevent Labour charging VAT on private school fees because this will make all those normal working people who need need to find £100k a year to cover school fees for their brood so much worse off.

Better late than never, but the Tories have finally recognised the injustice served on the most needy in society and are promising to restore child benefit to families with £120,000 annual income.

I'm seriously beginning to wonder if Sunak's deliberately trying to make the rout so bad he loses his own seat, and can bugger off to the US straight away instead of having to wait a decent interval.

I recall May doing so badly in her election that we wondered whether she was just deliberately scuppering it for some (Brexit) reason. But then Corbyn effectively said "hold my beer".

Yup. The difference is that Starmer is saying, "Sure, Rish! I'll hold your beer if you want to thy to exceed your previous feats"

I was going to suggest that if he wins the seat there will be a by-election within six months in Richmond, however since there's virtually nothing at this end to stop him doing pretty much what he likes where he likes while still cashing those MP paychecks.

Sunak leaves before Omaha beach commemorations, for an ITV electioneering interview.

He'll never hear the last of this.

The Guardian - excerpt:

"Tim Montgomerie, the founder of the grassroots Conservative Home website, told BBC Newsnight: “I want to put my head in my hands. If he came back for a political interview from the D-day commemorations that is indefensible."

Although it only made the front page of the Mirror, Sunak's now issued an apology, which will get a lot more coverage and keep the story in the news.

Apparently he's getting savaged on Mumsnet for wanting their kids to do National Service whilst he CBA to stay for the D-Day commemorations.

In completely different news, I've just learned that Ed Davey is a genuine hero, as in a recipient of the Royal Humane Society medal for saving the life of a woman who fell on railway tracks in 1994. He took off his coat to not get it caught on the third rail picked her up, then saw a train coming towards them, so walked to the other platform.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not ...

Sorry, there's the helicopter, Dave can you finish this?

Apparently we can forget that Rishi ******* off half way through.
The real outrage should be for the BBC.

Apparently a microphone at one of the live events they were covering picked up someone in the crowd say "French *********." as a marching band went past.

The BBC have apologised and taken the section with the offending comment off iPlayer for editing.

It means of course that the gammons that were saying exactly the same thing and worse yesterday are now demanding the BBC id defended and Kirsty Young who was presenting that section is sacked immediately.

My grandfather who fought in the Vercors and the liberation of Grenoble was known to comment how quickly a lot of Wehrmacht forces ran away from France when the tables were turned. He wouldn’t have expected it from a British PM.

Very surprised that we haven't heard them claim that under Labour there were virtually no foodbanks for the poor, under the Tories.....

I think they actually have at some point, haven't they?

ETA: Here's Cameron taking credit for the rise in the use of foodbanks:
“Obviously there has been an increase in foodbank use. That’s partly because of, you know, the difficulties we have faced as a country. It’s also, Jeremy, because we changed the rules. The previous government didn’t allow Jobcentres to advertise the existence of foodbanks.” (David Cameron, speaking to Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight, March 2015)

Stephen "Tommy Robinson" Yaxley-Lennon has shared an AI picture of troops advancing into the sea on D-Day. My theory is he heard of "The War in the Atlantic" and thought it was "The War on Atlantis".

These right wing gammony loons like parading their ignorance while not knowing how ignorant they actually are, don't they?

See also that Ukipper thing celebrating our bold, brave, British boys by showing a Spitfire...From a Polish squadron, flown by a Polish pilot (brilliantly skewered by Chris Wood in his excellent song, Spitfire).

Whilst the great British public have a healthy scepticism of its government and ministers, one thing it does respect and honour are those who fought and gave their lives in the war. That PM Rishi Sunak does not feel similar sentiment will be very striking to people as to his true character. Of course, he is not a bad person by any means but he just doesn't 'get it'. The appearance of shiny-faced Cameron standing in as 'acting head of government' in place of Sunak and the understandably ill KCIII having to take it easy was an unpleasant surprise and one wonders whether he is the puppet master pulling Sunak's strings. Sunak the front man would explain a lot about his lack of sincerity and absence of integrity (simply saying things stuffed into his mouth by ERG think tankers).

Ah well, at least he made an extra £120m last year as a consolation prize.
