E.U. tells USA what it wants

'PARIS, Nov. 3 -- European governments drew up a road map for relations with the new U.S. president Monday in their maiden attempt to present a concerted policy to guide dealings with the United States.

The outline, formalized by the 27 European Union foreign ministers at a meeting in Marseille, set out in broad terms Europe's top priorities for cooperation with the incoming U.S. administration. They laid out a unified platform in a domain traditionally dominated by nation-to-nation relationships.

The ministers steered clear of taking sides in the U.S. election, but their priorities seemed geared to the collaborative style of foreign policy advocated by Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate. The often unilateral decisions of the Bush administration during the past eight years, which were largely supported by Obama's Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain, frequently grated on European leaders and led to a cooling in traditionally warm relations with the United States. ...'

Is the rumour true that the EU will include a precondition for working with the USA, the extradition of all those in the US who planned, authorised, managed and perpetrated the USA torture programme?

Did you just invent that rumour?

That was a funny moment. I almost spit out my drink. I started reading the thread thinking "wow, A thread started by EJ that's not about torture or some wierd analogy involving Cuba", and then BLAM....right between the eyes.

The EU dooesn't know what it wants. How can it tell the US anything?

BTW: Doesn't it go without saying that each side will tell the other what it wants? Isn't that what cooperation and relationships are all about?

This seems like such a non-story.

Pre-conditions? Meh~ I wouldn't be surprised that they would advance such but I also wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't room for negotiation. America is still a strategically important Ally regardless of the problems of the past year. I give the EU much greater credit than to be so arrogant as to bite their nose to spite their face. It's in everyone's best interest for good economic and political relations.

An obstinate attitude of "our way or the highway" makes for piss poor diplomacy (see George Bush).

No.

Shame on them.
Oh sure. As I said, the EU isn't so stupid as to bite it's nose to spite it's face. There is little if anything to be gained from such an idiotic position. There is one hell of a lot to lose.

Ah, more American bashing.

Don't go there. Otherwise I'll be forced to gloat about how our country is the best on the planet, and if it weren't for the USA, yours would almost certainly be a province of the Third Reich or the Soviet Empire.

You can also type away at your computer, send messages over the internet, perhaps chat on the phone later today, watch your TV, drive in your mass produced car, and wonder what else Americans have ever done for you.

I feel responsible for your apoplexy and apologise for daring to mention the torture policies of the USA.

In penance I have already draughted a letter to all human rights organisations around the world telling them to stop mentioning the US torture programme because Tailgater doesn't like it.

PS

What other things would you like human rights activists to stop mentioning?

PPS

What was it US founding fathers complained of?

Ah yes -

'... For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences...'

You must get really annoyed when you read the Declaration of Independence. How dare they complain about things the US now does as a matter of might.

As the sergeant once remarked to the lieutenant:

"Sir, you can want in one hand and crap into the other: see which one fills up first."

DR

Yeah. I agree. It is no less than lese majeste for the EU to tell the US anything.

Thanks for showing how much contempt some in the US have for the EU. Carry on soldier.

What could they possibly lose that is worth anything? Close relations with torturers?

It would send a clear signal to the world that torture is unacceptable, whoever is responsible and that human rights are important.

Another person who doesn't know the difference between the people of the USA and the torture policies of the government of the USA? Apparently not.
You do know who invented television don't you? Apparently not.
You do know who invented the WWW don't you? Apparently not.
You do know who invented the telephone, don't you? Apparently not.

When you stop taking credit for the inventiveness of other countries you might be taken seriously.

Are you serious when you suggest that to be pro american is to be pro torture? Apparently so.

Supremely sad.
