Cont: Brexit XII

Exceptionalism and harking back to our days of imperial greatness when we bestrode the world and largely ignored Europe.

edited to add....

Encapsulated by the apocryphal headline from some time in the late 19th or early 20th century - "Fog in Channel, Europe cut off"

Although it’s somewhat ironic that, in the past in reality, we have never ignored Europe.

I call it "the Imperial Delusion" for short.

Yeah, because Europe would have handed us our arses if we'd tried anything...

I also think the old slogan "The Wogs Begin At Calais" applies.

On one of my favorites lines from "Black Panther"is when Killraven, sending out his high tech ships to basically conquer the world, says 'The Sun Will Never Set On The Wakandan Empire".

One of the primary motivations for Brexit was keeping wogs out regaining control over our borders.

If anyone was hoping that Brexit would result in net migration being measured in tens of thousands then they will be disappointed:

Net migration has reached a record annual level, with the UK adding 606,000 people in 2022

The big difference is that, post Brexit, we don't have immediate access to the EU labour pool so that migration is more difficult and more expensive.

The thing is that, although voters don't like immigration (generally speaking), governments do. They provide cheap labour which is good for the economy and the huge labour intensive government run organisations like the NHS and they contribute more to the exchequer than the natives as they frequently arrive after they have been educated and leave before they become pensioners.

It's unsurprising that no government seems to be able to control immigration - they don't want to. So when a political party tells you it wants to reduce immigration: it's lying to you.

The delusion runs deep. 70% of Brexit supporters still believe it "could have gone well" while a whopping 48% believe that politicians didn't try to make it work.
More.

I would just love to hear an explanation of how it "could have gone well" or what politicians could have done to make it work...

Will those be found next to the unicorn milk, just down the way from the magic honey, before you get to the rainbow with the pot of gold at the end?

It would have gone well if we had just stuck to our guns

We should have simply implemented the post Brexit situation we wanted, and waited for the EU to fall in line.

More than half the UK voting population, 58%, now support (re)joining the EU.

Question Time with entire audience being leave voters. Watched it last night for about 2mins, and had to stop.

Something something roofs something...

I've got friends who complain that you can't find a good builder/handyman that will do a no-VAT cash-in-the-hand price these days. What is the world coming to when you can't find a good crook?

Why would they fall in line?

Do we really have to do over the campaign? It was obvious to everyone that we were in the superior position and that the EU would do anything to even keep the crumbs we were offering. But no the Remainers were put in charge of "Brexit means Brexit" and of course caved in to Europe, we need to remember the problems with Brexit can be laid at the feet of the Remainers such as Johnson and Davis and Fox who were put in charge of the negotiations and exit.
