Cont: Brexit XII

Well, maybe if pro-Brexit politicians had been in charge of it?

Like "Brexit Bulldog" Davies? Who sometimes went to meetings and even when he did was sodding clueless?

Like Frost?

Like having a Foreign Secretary who didn't know that Dover was a major port for trading with Europe?

"Oven Ready" Johnson?

Do we really have to do over the campaign? It was obvious to everyone that we were in the superior position and that the EU would do anything to even keep the crumbs we were offering. But no the Remainers were put in charge of "Brexit means Brexit" and of course caved in to Europe, we need to remember the problems with Brexit can be laid at the feet of the Remainers such as Johnson and Davis and Fox who were put in charge of the negotiations and exit.

I heard that they had actually negotiated all the things we wanted but Remoaner civil servants killed the deal.

widdecombe on GBNews says 'I would like to see a poll done amongst remain voters because, believe me, some of them have changed their mind'

she says remain voters have told her they'd now vote for Brexit 'because they've been disgusted by the way the EU has tried to obstruct us at every level'

Then she woke up

I think that Boris Johnson really was a Remainer. It's just that he thought that supporting Brexit would be better for his career.

I'm a Remainer and I'm more disgusted that the EU were so reasonable. They treated us far better than they needed to - or we deserved.

Indeed. He thought his main chance was to position himself as the Champion of the Plucky Losers. Which then went down the toilet as they failed to lose.

I recall the dejected look on Leave campaigning politicians shortly after the referendum.

I wish I could remember who said of the "victorious" Boris straight after the result "he looks like someone shot his dog". And yes, he really did.

Accidentally bought a copy of the Star today. There's a piece in it about sitcoms and Brexit.

There's a more detailed piece on the story in the Guardian.

I think the prof may be reading too much into the named sitcoms...

Finally, a Brexit benefit! The new Threads app from Meta is available in the UK, but not the EU due to pesky privacy laws.

It’s nonsense. The idea that sitcoms airing thirty to forty years before the Brexit vote could tell us anything about the attitude of the British during the Brexit vote is, frankly, insulting.

Especially when said sitcoms were and are just as popular in extremely Europhilic Ireland.

Sitcoms are tricky IMO.

Programmes like Til Death do Us Part, Fawlty Towers and Dad's Army set out to lampoon "outdated" racist, sexist, homophobic and so on opinions. The trouble is that a significant proportion of the audience didn't realise this and instead thought they were a ringing endorsement of their bigoted views.

I'm reminded of the MAGA types who play Born in the USA and clearly haven't listened to the lyrics.

I recall not long after the referendum, it was said that a contributing factor was all the war films that boomers were brought up on, instilled a certain nationalist pride. This could be an extension of it.

The two biggest indicators of a Brexit voter was:
1. They are in favour of capital punishment
2. Like to watch Mrs Brown's Boys

But there are also those that think that years of WWII films have fed into the national identity. Allo Allo wouldn't have worked without that context.

I do actually think that Jeremy Clarkson contributed to and reflected a drip drip toxic attitude. I assume the attitude amongst him and his co-presenters of Top Gear was that racist jokes are fine as long as you hide them sufficiently. With the obvious inference that less-cryptic racism is fine if you have the right audience. But also the justification of general jingoism (and bullying disguised as banter). Not the thinking man's gammon, but gammons' idea of a thinking man.

It was a direct parody of Secret Army
