That's good, but what problem are you trying to solve? There is nothing wrong with where it's hosted now on donated hardware.

Other than this occasional URL issue, what goes wrong here? Less goes wrong than with the original owner. There's really no convincing thing that the owner can do to improve the forum. And the primary problem in the past with getting change around here was simply failing to get agreement on what to change.

The issue is that there is no attempt to get new members. This means that the number of active members and new posts is going down. This has been happening for many years.

I think the position has always been growth to stop the membership declining further than the ~75% reduction icerat has overseen.

I provide faster, more up to date, and better-looking forums than this one for free, reddit provides a massive platform for free, and last I checked, the world's biggest social network was free. The software itself is free, the moderators and admins work for free.

Well, as far as I can tell, Icerat has done the forum one significant favor, which was keeping it (just barely) alive. However, he seems bent on doing the absolute bare minimum necessary to keep the forum alive.

If I remember correctly, Orphia Nay closed the Australasian Skeptics forum in 2016 because she thought it was too expensive for her.

That is just wrong. A ten year dot com registration costs 50 bucks. That's right 5 bucks a year.

Ooo maybe there are extra services? Right? Nope. Any extra services can be purchase anywhere else. The domain name is independent of any extra services one might want. One can by those any old place if one is so motivated.

Now I have installed many internet servers in secure facilities over decades, actual rack mount physical servers in secure facilities. so do not attempt to pretend you have a clue.

I have so often been installing a 1U, 2U 3U, whatever array in one of those places. One has rented whatever U of space and one one gets a KVM to install ones gear in whichever rack. Earplugs in and arctic clothing on. Because they are freezing and noisy.

So you will be there installing your gear in whatever cabinet, and it is boring, because you are waiting for stuff to install, so you kind of look at other servers while waiting for whatever to install on your own gear. And you suddenly realise that I could take down governments merely by pulling out that plug.

But nobody does that. because we are all of us professionals who know what we are about. But we could.

Robert Lancaster went in hospital in a coma. His wife did not monitor his emails. The URL came up for renewal. An email was sent and ignored. So eventually they sold his URL. The buyers probably lost money as it did not last long. Now it belongs to a german organisation dealing with Language Translation and Localized Web Content
