• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Ed This forum will cease to exist on 15 August 2021

Sure. And what proportion of the membership do you think will be able or willing to do that?

Just imagine it. It would be a great time to post. Look at every interesting thread and make a well-informed opinion on the topic. You should have a full day to do so. The forum comes back for everyone else and they will all be busy responding to your posts. You can make sure this is all within the MA. For example, only post your normal number of posts in the day.

Yes, I see, in Community: https://www.facebook.com/internationalskeptics/community/?ref=page_internal.

Looks like it does happen so regularly that people can start making predictions.

Darat should perhaps send a message to the owner.

Forum members could also perhaps contribute financially (for both DNS and hosting).

Forum administrator Darat could perhaps ask the owner icerat whether he would welcome such a move, to help him pay the bills (to have a more stable forum ...).

I offered to contribute to the forum when icerat took over for almost nothing. His inactivity makes it very unlikely that I will offer to contribute again.

In practice, yes. I had written an explanation of how to do it, but thought better and did not post it. Somebody might actually do it.

Nice work, mate!

If anyone was going to have that diarised, it was going to be you.

I'm not betting against you.

To The Atheist. You expressed an interest in taking over the forum once. Maybe you should offer to buy the URL as per the above post? That way you could put a bet that I am right and the bet will give you a reward if I am right. And cost very little.

For the first time in recent memory, I have a couple extra dollars to my name. I could chip some in to save the forum if that's something people start doing. It kind of sucks here now, but it sucks waaaay less than anywhere else online. Plus, I like you guys. Even the ones of you I hate. I like to hate you.

I don’t think this will happen, but if it did I would contribute to a The Atheist fun forum.

Personally, I wouldn’t be too put out if one day I was unable to access this website.

This particular problem involves very little money. It's just the domain name. I checked with the registrar in question and they take $59.95 for one year for a .com domain. Which is ridiculously expensive compared to the usual prices. But still very little money for something that can potentially cause a lot of inconveniencies.

edit: Maybe someone willing to pay could call them and ask if this would be possible even if the person is not the owner of the domain.

Yes, the registrar for INTERNATIONALSKEPTICS.COM is NetEarth One Inc..

$59.95 for one year, $299.75 for five years and $599.50 for ten years.

Do you have any idea about the cost for hosting on Digital Ocean?

If I remember correctly, Orphia Nay closed the Australasian Skeptics forum in 2016 because she thought it was too expensive for her.

I would guess that they won't accept others paying without consent of the owner of the domain. It seems like it would imply an ownership or an obligation on the part of the owner towards anyone that paid for his property.

Just google "digitalocean hosting price calculator". I'd post the link for you but it's really long and something about it is weird and it won't edit in to the post properly.

But note there is no reason a forum needs to be hosted at the place it's URL is registered. And I'm pretty sure this one is still on icerat's hardware.

I've never heard of a business that wouldn't accept a payment from any source. I'm in the US if that matters. The only problem is that they probably won't give you an account number so identifying what you're paying for might be problematic.

ETA: I pay all my bills electronically. 16 of the last 17 checks out of my checkbook are for other peoples/organizations bills.

I found this: https://www.digitalocean.com/pricing/calculator/ (I removed the Google ad part of the link).

But one would need to know bandwidth and storage.

That's good, but what problem are you trying to solve? There is nothing wrong with where it's hosted now on donated hardware.

Other than this occasional URL issue, what goes wrong here? Less goes wrong than with the original owner. There's really no convincing thing that the owner can do to improve the forum. And the primary problem in the past with getting change around here was simply failing to get agreement on what to change.

I'm in the US also, and if I try to pay for my car loan, or phone bill, or even license plate over the phone or online, I have to provide proof of my identity. It's common enough that there are memes about it.

So should we take it as a given that the forum owner has no long term plans for this place and makes the decision whether or not to maintain it each August 15th?

There is nothing wrong with donated hardware, of course (it's nice for us, as members of this forum).

But, let's assume icerat is replaced as the owner, for the reasons you can probably suspect.

Then we can (probably) say bye bye to donated hardware.

This is why I believe that figuring out the cost of hosting this forum is still of some interest.
