White House, Senate, Congress: It's a Tea Party!

I'll admit it. I have no idea what a Trump presidency will be like.

When does the outlawing of state laws protecting homosexuals and transgender people come into play?

I don't think this will happen - instead states will be allowed to make laws which discriminate based on gender, sexual orientation, race, religion and so on - so long as there is "popular support" for the measure and that the prejudice is Christian in origin.

So in a few months we'll have another Supreme Court justice and a gay marriage case will hit. If the SC rules that states can refuse to recognize gay marriage, would that affect gay marriages already in place or only ones contracted after the decision? Would it be considered ex post facto, or not?

Good question. I am not a lawyer but I presume that would come down to how the State's law was framed. I presume that if a state is *that* bothered then it could choose to refuse to recognise a gay marriage wherever and whenever it was conducted. That would be the case that the SCOTUS would rule on and so would pass into law....

Over the last 40 years the benefits of economic growth have gone almost exclusively to the top 1%. This has led to rising levels of discontent among working and middle class Americans. That discontent played a large role in Trump's victory.

Trump has talked about grandiose plans for the economy but he has a legislature focused on tax cuts, austerity and undoing the social changes of recent decades. An estate tax repeal and tax cuts targeting high income taxpayers will sail through Congress. Jobs programs will die in committee. A bill to repeal Obamacare will be popular. Any program to replace it will leave families with modest incomes out. Expect bills defining marriage as only between a man and a women and legalizing discrimination by businesses on the basis of religion.

ACA seems like an easy first target, and a way to build goodwill through the GOP.

After that, Trump will use all the darling issues of the GOP congress to negotiate for things HE wants. I'm not sure what those really are (I think during the campaign he said whatever he felt he had to for votes). But I think they will be business/finance related, so he can boast a lot during the process.

Yes, the vast majority of those who voted for him will find themselves out of pocket.

His promises of 5%, 6%, 7% growth for the term of his Presidency are pure fantasy regardless of the legislature, there simply isn't room in the US economy (or any mature economy for that matter) for growth on that scale.

.... as long as that religion is Christianity (or maybe perhaps Judaism) - if a business attempts to discriminate based on Muslim orthodoxy then it's likely not to be able to (unless Christians also want to discriminate in the same way)

It is a forum. We do that for past time and fun. Half of us isn't even American. There is no analyzes just guesstimate. You are barking at the wrong tree.

I was going to comment on the irony of someone with 25,000 posts making that statement about posts on a forum.

ACA is an easy target and is the one most likely to backfire. An awful lot of people will lose coverage. Some people will die as a result of that. People are not really mad about ACA, they are mad because their rates have gone up. While ACA is a partial contributor to that it isn't the only factor.

When ACA is repealed and replaced with a program accessible to few and millions of people lose their insurance and rates continue to go up, who gets the blame then?

The expansion of Medicaid that came with ACA will also go away. There's going to be a disturbing amount of people losing healthcare.

I wonder how many Republicans went along with the repeated repeal attempts knowing it would never get out of the Senate or if it did Obama would veto it.

Now that the repeal and the ramifications therein are a real possibility, do any Republicans get cold feet at repeal without a replacement?

I look forward to living in a peaceful, prosperous, diverse nation under the leadership of Justin Trudeau.

It might be fun to have a thread about high-profile Americans who leave the country as a result of this election.

I strongly doubt that Trump does either.

Tariffs, lots of tariffs. Trade has been the only policy position he hasn't taken all positions on. Stock up on imported goods before they become scarce.

That is one of the things that Trump is going to have one hell of a fight with the Republcians in Congress over.
He also does not get that it's a two way street and other countries will hit us with Tariffs in retaliation.
