Wow, it looks like Anita's taking the road more travelled and dropping out.

Well, thank you, folks, for a most educational thread! I would particularly like to thank Ashles
Unca Yimmy
Cuddles
Locknar
desertgal
and the fabulously named Akhenaten
for teaching me a lot about how to critically examine claims.

I know I have forgotten at least two people, I try to find them and edit them in if I can.
ETA: Professor Yaffle, duh!

Seriously, watching you guys remain focused, courteous, factual and helpful in the face of such determined woo is just...I'm in awe.

I hope to see you at TAM!!

Obsequious? Did you get a Word a Day calendar for Christmas or something? :D

My Thesaurus suggested it. :D

It's all kind of complex to explain. For example, I think there might have been hallucinations involved. But then again, what if she only convinced herself that she really felt a ghost push her or that she can hear these things? That's more of a delusion. Do people with delusions do that? I'm guessing so.

Oh, absolutely. That claim of Anita's was what first indicated, to me, that she is delusional. In some instances, as you pointed out with the "lines" of the puzzle box, it's a combination of both delusion and hallucination - the mind forms the delusion, and then manifests the hallucination.

It's hard to explain an advanced delusional state. Suffice to say, we've seen ti here, I think. The mind can create an alternate reality that is as complex as reality itself. As well, delusions are always triggered by stored information (concepts, images, facts) or subconscious observation or both.

I like to create alternate realities too, but only for my own entertainment. :)

The thing about them though is that no matter how complex they might be, they can never be as complete as reality is, and some won't withstand any scrutiny at all. For example, a delusion that one can fly could only be sustained to the point of jumping out of a window, at which point the facts would immediately assert themselves

One of the things I find interesting in this particular case is the way in which (so far) the delusions seem to self-limit in a way that doesn't bring them crashing up against reality as catastrophically as in my example.

An instance of where this might happen though:

She can apparently see inside her own body, diagnose her own ailments and ought therefore have no need of doctors. Believing something like that should have introduced "shared mutual reality" to her fantasy really quickly if she's ever been sick. I wonder if it would be worth enquiring about this.

Thank you.

I echo your thanks to the other posters and must add your own name to the list of notables. You are, after all, largely responsible for The Survey™

It has been suggested by members of the JREF Forum that I go out to public places such as a mall and watch people and write down what medical perceptions I have. As Forum member Miss Kitt brilliantly pointed out, since I've experienced good or perfect accuracy in the past, it should be enough for me to simply state what I experience and to base a test on that.

Take a bow :)

ETA: I've just noticed how dishonest it seems for Anita to say "As Forum member Miss Kitt brilliantly pointed out, since I've experienced good or perfect accuracy in the past . . ."

I noticed that, too - she has a marked antipathy towards females. And I also noticed that most of her behind the scenes maneuvering via PM's was centered around the male posters. In fact, she didn't send that PM to Ashles until after he told her he was male.

Many have noted that depictions of Akhenaten are somewhat adrogynous. This may explain my having been treated as more of an annoyance than a potential friend or foe. Pharaoh is on the phence, as it were.

PS My thanks to Cuddles. There is indeed a quicker way of combining quotes than what I was doing before.

You'd think so, but this is Anita, after all. If she failed to 'diagnose' her own illness, she'd simply re-adjust the limits of the "ability"-which has more flexible boundaries than Paris Hilton.

Whatever it takes to hold onto the delusions...

What you said here set off a light bulb over my head, and I wanted to check a theory before I answered. I have to add this, because I think it's significant. There's a common thread running through Anita's claims, and I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was until you said that.

What you describe above is a "present time" delusion-believing you can fly even as you are jumping out a window.

But, if you look at ALL of Anita's claims - her sooper power anecdotes, her ghostly experiences - they are all delusional memories. Even her "ET incarnation" - she's 'remembering' a past life.

Years ago, before I started treatment, when I was in an advanced delusional state, one of my delusions centered around the "memory" of a trip to the Eiffel Tower. In reality, I've never even been to Paris. But, that "memory" was highly detailed at the time, and, in that state, you couldn't have convinced me that it didn't happen.

I think that's significant as an indication that she is truly delusional, and not just deliberately lying. Does she sense vibrational energy and "see" into people's bodes? No, but her mind is creating the delusional "memory" that she did.

I wonder if she thinks I'm male or female? Either way, I didn't get any PMs.:(

You could also use the quote and multi-quote buttons, Akhenaten. Then you're have links so people can click and see the post you're responding to.

Well I'll be damned. I've never figured out how to use that, so I did the FAQ thing and then used it do create this post. I'd be more pleased about learning all this if I wasn't so embarassed about having attempted to explain the technique myself in the first place.

I withdraw my protocol. :)

Well, people in general are reluctant to consider that their memory might be unreliable. Very reluctant. And very unreliable.

That was an issue on this thread we never overcame. Anita repeated over and over her insistence that we accept her descriptions of her readings as correct as described.
She never accepted the possibility that her memory might be imperfectly recalling the experiences.

Even on this thread we have seen examples of how she can spin misses into maybes and actual hits. And I think she herself believed her own spin.
The failures were forgotten.

I'm glad you made this observation. This explanation sits well, and although it's not the happpiest of prospects that she's a bit loopy, I'd still like to think Anita isn't deliberately attempting to mislead anyone.

I wonder whether she knows whether I am male or female. I did get a PM with her login for the synaesthesia test. And then lots of "just say if I haven't been clear and I'll explain it again" stuff. But then she blew up at me when I posted how one of her examples sounded just like cold reading to me.

You're male, obviously. It's like that old story about how a son and his father were in a car crash. The father is killed and the son is seriously injured. They rush the son to the hospital. The surgeon looks at the patient and says, "I cannot operate on him. He's my son!"

How can that be? Surgeon, professor - same difference. :D

I remember that one. My first thought is always "Well if the alternative is delaying his surgery until another surgeon is free maybe you should think about giving it a go!"

Though I've been coming here for over three years, there are many functions and features I've yet to learn. It usually happens when I need a particular function or feature. So don't feel embarrassed -- we're all "deficient" in one area or another. :)

Some people have a "lazy eye." Well, I have a "lazy penis." It just doesn't want to do anything! I take it for walks and read to it and do all kinds of other kindnesses for it, but it just flops there. :( Cripes, it's so damn lazy, I have to perform "facilitated masturbation" just to get a rise out of it.

By way of saying, except for the fact that I have a penis, "Anita" would be hard pressed to guess my gender. :)

I'm keeping a low profile on this one in the hope that everyone will forget that I was the one who originally couldn't do this and despite my almost 6,000 posts I never wondered what the little 'inverted commas button' under every single post did.
