Trump's US Threat to Greenland (which belongs to Denmark)

Greenland’s defenses are being bolstered against Russia and China, but the real target is Trump (CNN on YouTube, Oct 24, 2025 - 5:39 min.)
With US President Donald Trump repeatedly expressing his ambition to bring Greenland under US control and Russia and China vying for influence in the Arctic, the world’s largest island has emerged as a key Arctic battleground. CNN’s Chief Global Affairs Correspondent Matthew Chance joined the Danish military in Greenland to observe its biggest ever combat exercise. But while Danish military officials are keen to point out that the drills are intended to deter Moscow and Beijing, the real message is for President Trump – and to convince Washington there is no need to take Greenland as its own.
Of course, there's a need to take Greenland! Danish politicians really don't understand the psychology of Donald Trump if they think that it's a question of military logistics or the national security of the USA. Trump needs to take Greenland as his own as much as he needs a new gold-plated ballroom.

And as I said in that other thread: what is exceptional about U.S. fighter jets flying from a big U.S. air base that has been there since the 50's?
Actally before that. Both the US and Britain has air bases in Greenland that were vital to winning the battle of the Atlantic in World War 2.

A new podcast episode from The Atlantic, where Greenland 🇬🇱 also comes up in the discussion.
David Frum, who served as a speechwriter for President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2002, talks with Tom Nichols — academic, writer, and national security expert — about whether American officer would obey orders from Trump to invade Greenland.
With a 2:39-minute-long clip from the podcast.
He finds the whole idea absurd and hopes that American military personnel would object to it, but he is not sure what might happen if Trump ordered an invasion.

Jacob Kaarsbo, who formerly served in the Danish Defence Intelligence Service — including as a chief analyst — in an interview on 🇩🇰 TV2 NEWS;
“The new U.S. ambassador is not merely a career diplomat tasked with managing the bilateral relationship with 🇩🇰 Denmark. Howery is personally involved in a project aimed at taking control over Greenland 🇬🇱.
His support for Praxis Nation goes far beyond a token contribution — it is not just a matter of tossing a few coins into a collection box. Together with his business partner Peter Thiel, Howery is among the largest donors, having provided more than 500 million USD to this controversial organization.
This suggests that the ambassador, much like his superior, President Trump, does not recognize Denmark’s territorial integrity.
When Howery speaks of “security in the Arctic,” it is reminiscent of Putin’s references to “peace in 🇺🇦 Ukraine” — a peace maintained under 🇷🇺 Russian dominance. Likewise, “security in the Arctic” implies security under American control.
I'm not at all impressed by Jacob Kaarsbo's skills as a former intelligence service official - when asked about the 'Havana syndrome', it became clear that he relied 100% on the very flawed 'investigation' conducted by Scott Pelly and 60 Minutes - but he may be right in this case.

There are many replies to Orla Joelsen's tweet, most of them from Canadians, many of them complaining about the U.S. ambassador to Canada.

"Trump’s appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his envoy to Greenland marks another move in his gambit to annex the self-governing Danish territory. The U.S. “has to have Greenland for national security,” Trump said at a press conference on Monday."

This is why Trump is so pro-Putin. He believes in a world ruled by dictators, who can just do what they want.

The survival of the world depends on it

Donald J. Trump
@realDonald Trump
I am pleased to announce that I am appointing the GREAT Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland. Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country's Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World.

Congratulations Jeff!

I think it's pretty ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ clear that Greenland has no intention on negotiating.
We aren't actually negotiating with Greenland, which isn't a sovereign nation. We are negotiating with Denmark.

And Denmark may have no intention of giving up Greenland, but that doesn't mean that there's nothing else we would be interested in getting from Denmark in negotiations. Greenland is an opening bid, that doesn't mean that's the only thing Trump would settle for.
Also, Trump isn't talking about negotiating. He's talking about taking over.
But what's he actually doing? He's appointing a diplomat. What do diplomats do? They aren't generals. They don't take over. They negotiate.

No, he'll probably want the Pharaoh Islands as well, with all their pyramids. They have shiny things inside!

I wonder if anybody has asked Trump what exactly they expect to get from Greenland that they don't already have. They can build all the bases they want, almost anywhere they want. In what way is the U.S. more secure by owning Greenland?

Yes, but it would be one less country that could point to having a decent health care system...
