Trump's Second Term

It is only 'known' to be fake by Trump's DOJ and FBI, in other words, by Trump himself. So a pretty unconvincing determination.
As for getting my hopes up, I don't have much--but there has been a sudden recent increase in dissent from the cult, as the hardcore right witnesses Trump's pathetic mishandling of the scandal. So a coup remains a possibility even before the expected thrashing come November.
And it goers wayyy deeper than Trump...we really need a separate thread here on what seems destined to be the coverup/political scandal of the century. Trump's DOJ (continuing his blatant disregard for federal law) acknowledging that there are 1.7 million...yes--MILLION documents in the file. That represents a *huge* investigation. So the obvious question, which should be the headline every day by every news agency, is why is it with 1,500+ victims, and 1.7 million documents, a sole (female!) conspirator is sitting in 'jail' (luxury housing) right now for this enormous conspiracy crime involving multiple billionaires, celebrities, and politicians? That is the question Trump's base wants an answer to, and they haven't gotten a good response yet (we all know why).

there’s been discussion of the espstein files in this thread.

i agree it’s a massive coverup. perhaps it won’t be what takes trump down, but it’s definitely a chronicling of things that happened, and boy does it look really bad.

I'm guessing once that didn't work, and Barr and Ghouliani couldn't get what they wanted from Zelenskyy, there wasn't any point in keeping up the pretense. The people around him will have told him that continuing to withhold military aid would lose him support in the Senate and the House, as well has among his MAGA chuds.

As one of a number of potential side notes of relevance there, there was also the part where, even after all that, much of that lethal aid to Ukraine through the Trump Administration came with strings to prevent it from being close enough to the front lines to be used as lethal weaponry, rather than props for show.

And I note you have not touched on Trump's push to increase European defense spending or US oil production.

:ROFLMAO:

I've been pondering the "spheres of influence" idea and maybe Trump's actions do make more sense if you assume he thinks 3 such spheres are the natural order of things and the way the world should be made to work. So Russia gets Ukraine, China gets Taiwan (once chip fabrication magically reappears in the US) and the US gets Canada, Greenland and Venezuela.

Hmm.

The thing is that a lot of the MAGA crowd, like MTG seem to have been at some level sincere in their deranged belief about child abuse conspiracies like pizzagate.

Now there's plenty of actual evidence of fat worse and by genuine elites. So Trump is losing the deranged supporters.

First off, the restrictions on long range strikes had nothing to do with making them not lethal (as evidenced by the fact that they were in fact used to lethal effect). Those restrictions were to prevent Western weapons from hitting Russian territory. Why? Because we were afraid of escalation. This wasn't something Trump came up with. Biden imposed such restrictions too, and so did the rest of Europe. You can argue that such fears of escalation were misplaced, or that the benefits to Ukraine were worth those risk, or any of a number of reasons for why we should not have imposed those restrictions. But this idea that Trump was the only one doing it is just plain wrong. Everyone giving Ukraine long range strike capable weapons was doing that.

while they got some of the details wrong, unfortunately the child abuse conspiracy was pretty real.

to me at this point anyone supporting trump today is a deranged supporter.

First, the sensational headline gets your attention.... Village Bombed in US air Strike

So then you read the article, and find a somewhat different story..

A day after part of a missile fired by the United States hit their village, landing just meters from its only medical facility, the people of Jabo in northwestern Nigeria are in a state of shock and confusion.
He said the projectile had struck a field “approximately 500 meters” from a Primary Health Center in Jabo and that, while there were no casualties,
Nigeria’s Information Ministry later said that the government, in collaboration with the US, had “successfully conducted precision strike operations” targeting ISIS hideouts in the forests of Tangaza district in Sokoto.
However, it also noted that “during the course of the operation, debris from expended munitions fell in Jabo,” and another area in north-central Kwara state – though it stressed there had been no civilian casualties.

So the village wasn't "bombed" after all... some debris from an exploded missile fell in a field "just metres" away... Yeah, just 500 metres away!! (for the Americans in the room, thats a third of a ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ mile!).

FFS use your critical thinking skills folks and start employing some skepticism. Read the whole article, don't just knee jerk to the sensationalist headline.
The problem is perception is important.

This century the US has taken military action (including drones) in the following countries.

Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, now Nigeria

Including action by Israel (generally viewed as a US proxy)
Qatar, Egypt, Palestine, Sudan, Tunisia

The commonality is these are all Muslim countries. Roughly 5,000,000* Muslims have been killed in the last 25 years as a result of US military action, roughly ten times the number of Germans killed by the US in WW2. The majority of these were non-combatants.

Now it appears that the US has run out of Brown Muslims to kill and has moved on to Black Muslims. The perception isn't improved by US politicians emphasising the Christian vs Muslim aspect of the attacks.

It isn't helped by the fact that those killed in NW Nigeria were of no threat to the US. It certainly isn't clear that these attacks will stabilise Nigeria, or result in a civil war and wide spread destabilisation and violence across West Africa as recent US actions have resulted in instability and widespread violence across the middle east and North Africa (Libya).

If these attacks make things worse, result in more lives being lost then the US attacks in Nigeria aren't justified. If they leave things in status quo then they aren't justified Even if they result in improvements they are only justified if the money spent on the attack couldn't have achieved the same or greater benefit by being spent on non-lethal interventions. One could ask if the money was spent on supporting vaccinations, child health and education in NW Nigeria would it have produced a better long term outcome?

*Or the US has been killing Muslims at the rate of 25 every hour for the last 25 years.

Which is a bit of a problem for him when he's also losing his most deranged supporters.

There is no good faith reason to support him. Unless one sincerely is a fascist and white supremacist.

Because no immigrants worked on any of them.

Stephen Miller
@StephenM
Someone should write an alternate historical novel where Americans are the first to master the automobile, the first in flight, the first to harness the atom, the first to land on the moon — but just keep going and never open our borders to the entire third world for sixty years

I guess Werner Von Braun, Einstein and Nilola Tesla weren't immigrants?

Yeah, fiction solves everything. Why do that? Why not start with not starting America with slavers?

Not viewing former Nazis as immigrants is certainly in character for Miller.

As is judging someone based on which part of the world they come from.

Yes, that would be alternative history all right. This corrupt administration really, really wants to re-write history. Sort of a, I dunno, a re-white.

What's Miller's alt hist novel going to be about? An America which walled itself in some time in the '60s then decades later sends explorers out to discover a strange other world where people talk in odd ways about "kilogrammes" and "kilometres", and don't know what Gilligan's Island is?
