Shutdown 2023

Gaetz said they will be a shutdown. I can't stand the man, and would love to see that smirk wiped off his face by a good punch, but I think he is proably right here.
He also said it is McCarthys' fault. Kevin certaiinly has huge share of the blame, but look in the mirror, Matt; you and your ilk are just as much to blame.
I am now convinced that Gaetz Wants to take down McCarthy. He has not thought of the consequences, he was just wants to take down McCarthy. It has become personal.
A number of retired congress people from both parties have said you would be shocked by how much of the fighting you eee within parties is driven not by policy differences, but by sheer personal dislilke.

GOP's only hope is to make a deal with the Dems. Or expel the 6 right-wing hold outs that are making their work impossible.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place. Dealing with the dems would probably be interpreted as scandalous by right wingers, but it's hard to imagine any other way out of this jam that isn't totally capitulating to the lunatic fringe of their own party.

To me this is a numbers game. What are there more of?

GOPers willing to make a deal with the Dems and Dems willing to make a deal with them, or GOPers unwilling to make a deal with the Dems and prefer to hold out for the MAGAts to come to their senses?

From the far side of the pond, it seems to be more of a McCarthy trying to keep his job game. As long as any MAGAt can effectively get him sacked, he's never actually going to allow things to progress to any kind of vote, so the numbers game never gets into play.

Like I said, Speaker-In-Name. For all my criticisms of Pelosi (and there are many), she could get the various, far more diverse, factions of her party to come together.

McCarthy got the role because it was "his turn". And we all know how well that works in politics. The fact that it took over a dozen votes should have told him something.

Isn't that the whole reason the Problem Solvers Caucus exists? Why does it seem like any solution they are on board with is for the benefit of Republicans? The Democrats in there should pull their Republican counterparts over to get the votes to pass the budget.

The wall that Trump build was extremely short, easily broken, and easily climbed.

Or should the Federal Government put in their own buoys with blades in the Rio Grande? How about a program to place caches of water in the desert, laced with strychnine?
At this point, the only program McCarthy's supporters would accept would be to deputize all the crazed wannabe militias at the border and given them unlimited ammo and qualified immunity.

It doesn't matter what it would be spent on, the point is shifting the shutdown's justification back over to being the Democrats' fault. He's grasping at "but Schumer won't come to the table" as if any deal he makes would mean a thing. Right now Democrats lose absolutely nothing telling McCarthy to sit and spin and he very much knows this.

He may as well be announcing that the grapes are sour.

The Democrats had offered to fund a border fencing many times before in the past. Nothing new about the offer. Throw them a bone so they can agree to the Senate plan.
 
Why is it always the Democrats' responsibility to throw the bone? Let McCarthy put forward a straight funding plan with no GOP cuts and the Democrats in the house will vote for it. They're not the ones demanding a shutdown. This whole ****show is entirely on his head.
