Paul Daniels seriously ill

Saw that. Definitely a shame. Coming on the heels of Tom Mullica's death makes it a sad week indeed.

Hard to imagine now given how long he's been off the mainstream TV circuit but he was one of the biggest draws of the 80s in the UK. Not just the magic. IIRC he had two game shows and a children's programme (also featuring Debbie).

He wasn't dated when he was at his 80s peak, his style was fresh and original.
He is from my part of the country, he was a local lad.
He lived next door to a friend of mine in the village where I grew up.
He was still in the grocery business at the time and only doing magic 'part time' on the local Club Circuit (For those unfamiliar with the northern 'Social Club' or Working man's Club watch the Sitcom Phoenix Nights or catch a clip on Youtube of the old 70s variety show set in the fictional Wheeltappers and Shunters club)

RIP

Recently a right-wing commentator mentioned that Daniels had had to put up with a great deal of mockery in the UK. When I think about it now I realize it is true. His wife too.

The slightly bizarre Wizbit. (ha ha thisaway..)

(The Paul Daniels show was must watch TV at the time. He blazed somewhat of a trail, I think.

I can't really remember any other TV magicians around at that time, with that profile, with the exception of maybe Tommy Cooper, but he took a somewhat different approach to magic.

Maybe Ali Bongo would pop up in something occasionally.

Don't forget Geoffrey Durham 'The Great Soprendo' he used to pop up on various things.

"Piff Paff Poof!".

David Nixon was probably the most famous TV magician in the 70s. Like Daniels he had his own TV series. He died late 70s so was already gone before Daniels rose to fame.
