Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.
Paul Daniels was the first magician I was aware of as a child. Although his routine was a little dated by modern standards, it was polished to the peak of perfection.
Hard to imagine now given how long he's been off the mainstream TV circuit but he was one of the biggest draws of the 80s in the UK. Not just the magic. IIRC he had two game shows and a children's programme (also featuring Debbie).
He wasn't dated when he was at his 80s peak, his style was fresh and original.
He is from my part of the country, he was a local lad.
He lived next door to a friend of mine in the village where I grew up.
He was still in the grocery business at the time and only doing magic 'part time' on the local Club Circuit (For those unfamiliar with the northern 'Social Club' or Working man's Club watch the Sitcom Phoenix Nights or catch a clip on Youtube of the old 70s variety show set in the fictional Wheeltappers and Shunters club)
Recently a right-wing commentator mentioned that Daniels had had to put up with a great deal of mockery in the UK. When I think about it now I realize it is true. His wife too.

I can't really remember any other TV magicians around at that time, with that profile, with the exception of maybe Tommy Cooper, but he took a somewhat different approach to magic.
Maybe Ali Bongo would pop up in something occasionally.

David Nixon was probably the most famous TV magician in the 70s. Like Daniels he had his own TV series. He died late 70s so was already gone before Daniels rose to fame.
