Mubarak has resigned!!!!!!!

More from the Who...
"They decide, and the shotgun sings a song."

.
I remember the euphoria when Castro threw out Batista.
We went to the Cuban Embassy on Rhode Island Avenue in DC to watch the "Freedom Fighters" cavorting on the front lawn in their cammies.....
And then the executions started....
Like in Iraq?

I'm pretty sure a civil war and or two competing sides are part of the mix when it comes to mass executions. A few of Mubarak's thugs and maybe Mubarak could be tried if they have been specifically blamed for murdering political enemies.

The executions in Iraq had a semblance of legality.
ISTR those in Cuba were summary..
The victim worked in a certain job... shoot him.
Like the French did to Lavioisier... Land-owner tax collector... "France has no need for geniuses"... and so it's proved ever since.

a peacefull revolution? my god... when are those savages going to learn the western ways?

I have no love for Murabarak, but it's a crap shoot. A lot of people are viewing this with Rose Colored Glasses.
The record of the Mid East when it comes to democracy is not good. It migth be a case of "Old Boss Same As The New Boss".

Or worse...

.
It's traditional.
Think Charlie I, Louis XVI (image) and Marie, and Robespierre..

And how did that Robspierre guy get in again?

This is the "cross your fingers and wait" phase. Time will tell if this is a win for the Egyptian people and democracy.

It's no wonder the Chinese government is trying to maintain control over their public's Internet access.

We're all watching Egypt. I'm wondering which country is next.

It probably needs to a country with a military made up of common men as opposed to some groomed elite that feels separate from the common people. And a large gap between rich and poor is probably another ingredient needed.

Yemen, PA, Iran, Saudi Arabia - In that order

Or worse...

Robie was one of the architects of the takedown of the monarchy.
Got too big for his britches.
.
"At this point, the decree of 22 Prairial (also known as law of 22 Prairial) was introduced to the public without the consultation from the Committee of General Security, which in turn doubled the number of executions permitted by the Committee of Public Safety.[20]

This law permitted executions to be carried out even under simple suspicion of citizens thought to be counter-revolutionaries without extensive trials. By allowing this law to be passed, the people of France began to question Robespierre and the Committee because they were executing people for seemingly meaningless reasons, and also because they had passed a law without the help of the Committee of General Security."
.

That's a frequent occurrence in those violent changes of government.

Before You Go:

Where's the $300,000,000,000 you stole from the Egyptian people?

I think they should put his ass in jail until he coughs up the money.

I'm actually pretty optimistic about Egypt. Sure, I know what happened in Cuba, Iran, etc but this just feels much different. The Muslim Brotherhood is the best organized and experienced opposition group but they don't have popular support and the feel of the street is that everybody wants real reform and real democracy and aren't going to put up with new boss is the same as the old boss. I'm very hopeful.

no no!!!

the Muslim Brotherhood will take over and Egypt will become an Islamo-fascist state!!! their first act will be to declare genocidal war on Israel!!

;)

compared to the American Revolution, this one was relatively peaceful.

I just mentioned the peacefulness of the transfer of power to the military council in another thread:

"So far, the transfer to the Egyptian military has been relatively peaceful. This is a military which has had close ties to the Pentagon for decades. The Egyptian military is showing the earmarks of an honorable military, one which might be willing to be the guarantors of democracy, like it's U.S. counterpart and partner."

I'm pretty sure he was fired, probably by the military leaders behind closed doors after Mubarak's incredibly stupid speech yesterday.

I think you're right, but I think it happened before his speech. The military and others all seemed to think it was a done deal. I think Mubarek was just trying to better his position by not resigning for real yesterday.

If he got any concessions (immunity from possible future prosecution, for example) by agreeing to resign, he may have hurt himself with that speech.
