Mubarak has resigned!!!!!!!

I wonder if maybe his first idea of waiting until September might not have been a good idea. That would have been seven months to organize new elections where different political parties could form and campaign, and the electorate could at least have some semblance of an educated choice. I know that's not as satisfying to those who wanted Mubarak out ASAP, but might have been less dangerous.

A very quick election would bother me too. I don't think the protestors are expecting elections within a week or anything. Of course political parties need a chance to organise and advertise their positions.

But I still think Mubarak had to go. Obama actually said it well: Egyptians "remain unconvinced that the government is serious about a genuine transition to democracy". How could anyone trust Mubarak to deliver? The army, at least, knows that the people aren't going to be fobbed off with flattery and cosmetic changes -- because that has been tried and its failure acknowledged.

The next big test is emergency rule. Ending that was another of the protestors' demands. The army has already agreed to end it when the current situation settles -- or whatever words to that effect mean.

Let's hope my fears prove groundless.

I hope my optimism doesn't lead to disappointment.

median age in Egypt is 24.

I had no problem getting internet access even in a relatively small town 8 years ago when I visited.

It's the social networking generation, and they are in their millions. No army can stop them. Heck - most of the army *is* them.

Is this a sign that the Rapture is happening? If so, can you Christians give me your stuff?

And another Lotus revolution goes into the books. Thank you linesmen thank ball boys

Many under estimate Egyptians. They are a very cosmopolitan people, who believe you are Egyptian before you are anything else. I believe we just witnessed the moment of conception for the worlds newest democracy.

Hopefully the gestation and labor period are not to difficult and the people become the proud owners of a government that fears them....not the other way around

Good luck Egypt. Self determination brings great joy, but also huge responsibilities

I'm pretty sure he was fired, probably by the military leaders behind closed doors after Mubarak's incredibly stupid speech yesterday.

About 20 minutes before the announcement, all the tanks on the streets turned their turrets so they no longer faced protestors....then the crews began hanging national flags from their vehicles.

Either that was the army passing the word to it units that they guy was gone, or the army was no longer prepared to support him in any way

And all without a war or Second Amendment remedies. :D

20 minutes is not enough time for the tank turning to be the cause. It was more likely the result.

Under normal circumstance yes. But after that speech yesterday, it is clear he was so dislocated from reality, any answer is possible

Not yet Thunder. They merely overthrew the President. The real fun is just beginning.
.
I remember the euphoria when Castro threw out Batista.
We went to the Cuban Embassy on Rhode Island Avenue in DC to watch the "Freedom Fighters" cavorting on the front lawn in their cammies.....
And then the executions started....

It's no wonder the Chinese government is trying to maintain control over their public's Internet access.

We're all watching Egypt. I'm wondering which country is next.

It probably needs to a country with a military made up of common men as opposed to some groomed elite that feels separate from the common people. And a large gap between rich and poor is probably another ingredient needed.

I heard that Mubarak was the third longest running leader in Egytian history, going back 5,000 years. The other two were both Pharoahs.

That says a lot.

I thought that his plea of "Let's wait until September" was him hoping that the national frenzy would have died down by then and that whatever he did at that later date (for example, saying that he'd decided to stay in power after all) it would be hard for any opponents to re-kindle the same level of outrage all over again.

That being said, a swift tranistion of power has all kinds of ways this could go off the tracks.

Here's hoping for the best (while expecting something less than a secular democracy to emerge).
