It's like praying for somebody in trouble, they want to be seen to be doing something to help without having to go to the bother of expending any effort.
I don't really have any objection to virtue signaling from people who aren't in a position to exercise much meaningful agency. It can be kinda cringey sometimes, but whatever. Stake a pride flag into your yard or make an angsty post on social media about whatever, we're all trapped in this hell society and there's very little to nothing we can as individuals do about that, so whatever. The neighbors want to "pray for me" because my house got deleted by a hurricane, sure, i'll accept that with the casseroles and whatever little else they can offer with complete gratitude.
No patience for this kind of performative nothingness from those in actual positions of power, especially for liberal politicians who want the credit for being progressive or whatever but routinely refuse to use their considerable power in a way consistent with these supposed beliefs. The worse things get, the more flamboyant the virtue signaling becomes to distract from their total lack of meaningful action.
