• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

I HATE, HATE, *HATE* GOOGLE!

So tonight I wanted to watch a series of videos on YouTube related to Manitoba Hydro's generating stations. Just as the second video started, a white balloon appeared on top of the video saying "Make money on YouTube." It did not have an X to close it ... I had to click on the damned thing to make it go away, and it replaced the balloon with an ad!

RANT! Okay, I get that YouTube wants to make money by selling ads. But to PUT THEM ON TOP OF A VIDEO I'M WATCHING??
And I REALLY HATE the fact that YouTube is for all intents and purposes a monopoly on this sort of content, so they can abuse their captive audience with crap like this, and do it with impunity. And like the nice little psychopaths they are, Google simply doesn't care. Not about me, not about their abuse of power ... it's all about money.

I'm SO pissed off right now. No way in hell am I going to sign up for a paid account with Google to get rid of the ads. That's practically a protection racket. Give money that THAT outfit? It feels like I'd be paying someone to rape me.

A couple of things

1 Are you sure that there was no "x" click box to close it. Usually the "x" is in the top right hand corner, but you cant see it until you leave your mouse over the ad for a second or two. Even then it is very small

2. Get Adblock. I have no ads at all on my youtube, including those annoying 10 second ads at the beginning, and ads that are put into the video stream. Absolutely no ads on any youtube channel, ever

ETA: Can you post a link to the actual youtube video you were watching that had the ad you couldn't get rid of.

NO, THERE WAS NO 'X' TO CLOSE the POPUP. I've seen these in the past with their "X" to close it, and on this on there WAS NO "X"/

And for chrissake, read the bloody thread before you jump in with stupid comments. See post # 16. For the record, and for those who might miss it again:
I'M ALREADY RUNNING UBLOCK ORIGIN, NOSCRIPT, AND THE MVPS HOSTS FILE.

If you don't know what these are, please research them before commenting on running an ad-blocker.

Did you try to turn off Annotations on the video menu?

Can you link the video to see if anyone else can find the problem?

Aside from taking issue with most of your hyperbole, you do realise that YouTube still isn't profitable?

Sad, but not our problem - and if more people stop using it it will be even less our problem. I stopped using you tube once they hardened/ changed the ability to download videos.

The thing to do is to use the Internet against them. Recruit a zillion of your fellow offendees to help.

When you see an ad, contact the commercial interest and tell them their ad interrupted your Youtube experience and now you HATE, HATE, HATE their product, a product you once thought highly of.

This is , by the by, an excellent suggestion!!!!!!!!! For any problem site.

If enough people do that and let the site know they are doing it, companies either will change the way their ads work (not by blocking content) or they will give up those ads. With a number of such sites I will not miss them when they go!!!!!

Calmly please!!!! More !!!! less big red screaming!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure, it's in the next paragraph. But I'll tell you why you might not see it when you watch it. It's quite possible Google is running an A/B testing program with this, where they'll try out an idea on some users according to whatever criteria they believe might help them make a decision as to whether or not to roll out that code across all of YouTube. Browser? Geoloaction? Absense or presense of an ad blocker? All those factors and more may play into whether or not you and I get the same experience.

I just watched it again. At 0:46 into the video I get "Suggesed: Make Money on Youtube." It's not part of the video stream itself, because when I paused the video the ad went away after 10 seconds. But it still left a watermark in the form of a whilte circle with an "i" in it in the upper right hand corder. This is not the content I asked for, nor was it part of the content that Manitoba Hydro uploaded. I asked for information on the Pointe du Bois generating station and not for an advertisement overlayed on the video stream.

If you don't see it, perhaps try running the video in a private browsing window.

That "i Suggested ..." thing is added by the person who made the video. It's an "annotation". If you go to the gear icon you can switch them off. The "ad" then goes away.

(AFAICT. From South Africa, with uBlock running.)

That appears to be over, at least it is for me. Dailymotion went into the slice it up in to a bunch of small files route but a quick add on update fixed that.

There's always online converters that will take the video and make it available to you for download in any format you choose

I was going to post about a problem with YouTube downloads in 1080p coming in as separate .mp4 and temp_ao files but I just did it and my browser wove them together like it's supposed to. Maybe it's related to file size?

Screaming at people who are trying to help you will dissuade people from trying to help you.

Screaming at people who are trying to help you will dissuade people from trying to help you.

Not me. It makes me want to help even more. And then a bit more and a wee bit more after that.

Pretty much my normal spiral of virtue until the inevitable cease and desist order arrives.

I find it doubtful that Manitoba Hydro added that annotation. They're a provincial crown corporation whose charter places the public interest above profits. Right now they're carrying $13 billion in debt, and that's expected to increase significantly over the next few years. I rather doubt that advertising a YouTube service on their YouTube channel will make any sort of a dent in that.

My employer makes a tidy profit, and yet the department budgets are closely scrutinized and tightly controlled.

I can only imagine the budgetary pressures on the departments of a government agency carrying billions in debt and charged with serving the public interest.

But whatever. The hypothesis is easily tested. Instead appealing to your personal incredulity, why not make the test and report the results?

I see it too (Ghostery and Privacy Badger). It doesn't pop up for me, but the i is there for me to click on.

Helpful clues:

1) I don't see it in any of the other videos I click on in the sidebar. Just this one.

2) The ad says "Suggested by AdRev for Rights Holder." Not "Manitoba Hydro," Rights Holder

Hypothesis: someone has a bot that flags random videos and reports them as using music that infringes on their copyright. Google's bot lets them add an annotation to plug their music, they run an spammy ad instead and get money based on someone else's views for as long as no one cares to report it.

ah yes I saw that, its a 1cm x 5cm thing in the corner and it went away within 5 seconds, i barely noticed it.

If it is appearing much bigger for you..

Get an ad blocker. I use uBlock Origin. I haven't seen an ad on YouTube (or anywhere else) since installing it.

Like the other guy said: get adblock. Works great, although _sometimes_ an add will manage to go through. If that happens, hit F5 on the keyboard and odds are, it'll go away.

Stay zen.

I use Ad Block and the post that mentioned ads was the first time I was aware that YouTube ads were a thing. Just get an ad blocker and enjoy life.

^^ this.

Correction: it's not a government department, it's a crown corporation. In theory it's separate from the government. But in practise the government has more opportunity to interfere with its affairs. Like the time when the government needed some help to balance its books, and just confiscated the corporation's profits for those two years.

But whatever. The hypothesis is easily tested. Instead appealing to your personal incredulity, why not make the test and report the results?
What test are you thinking about?

Ad block + and Ghostery with Chrome.
I see nothing.
I think the OP is a little confused about ad-blocking.
