Should we outlaw them or not?

I know that this is probably the most sensitive topic on the JREF's political forum but this is one issue I am undecided on and I would like to hear both sides.

You may get some sensible answers, but what is your opinion?

I think that for the US (which is where I assume you're posting from, given the assumption that we know who "we" is supposed to be), even if you could magically remove every gun from private hands you'd still run into the basic "freedom" issue, which is "It is your right as an American citizen to have guns". So, no.

For me, in the UK, I think we have gone a bit too far in the outlawing stakes, since a number of entertaining weapons are now illegal thanks to one or two nutters. Even so I don't think people should be carrying any sort of weapon around in public. It's a cultural thing. You'll never get any agreement.

We have had quite a few gun threads before but I haven't seen any for a while. As I recall we were unanimous in agreeing guns were bad and should be banned.

:D

Perhaps we should just add that "The Palestinians deserve freedom from Jewish oppression" and kill the thread now?

Guns don't kill people. People don't kill people.

Bullets kill people.

That aside, I've never had occasion to even hold a gun in my nearly 30 years on this planet. I do, however, think that any law abiding citizen should be able to own as many guns as they'd like.

Bullets that are launched from a barrel of a gun that hit a vital spot of a human with large enough velocity kills people.

Good Idea, I think for newbies we should post a few conclusions the board has already agreed on.

Elton John totally copied Reo Speedwagon,
Planet X option is always the right answer in any poll and
interesting Ian isn’t.

Did we really get the last doubter (whoever that was, I can't remember) to agree with that?

No. And I don't like guns, I don't want people around me armed with them and so on but still I don't think they should be outlawed. However I do think they should be controlled - so for example no convicted criminals should be able to legally own a gun, all guns should be registered, there are set conditions on how they can be stored and transported and so on.

That was sarcasm, right?

I live in a country with a high level of guncontrol.
The only way you get to (legally) use a handgun is if you're a member of a gun club (competition, target) and in order to own a handgun the gun club must first issue an approval (which usually takes a high level of mastery and regular attendance to tournaments).
That said, I like target practice with handguns, and I was an active member in a gun club for several years when I was younger but I quit due to a shoulder injury which prevented me from using my left hand for singelhand shooting and the fact that i moved away from my hometown.

I am in favor of at least a minimum of gun control. As in:
In order to own a gun you should
1. Not be a convicted criminal. (felony)
2. Have a safe place to store your weapon and ammunition.
3. Know how to shoot and handle your weapon safely.
4. Know how to clean and maintain your weapon.

Then again I am not an american so my opinion doesn't really count towards the gun controll issue in america.

You're not going to get any enlightened sense of discussion in the United States because there is a significant, intensely vocal minority who will have a conniption fit at the suggestion of regulation, and go off citing a portion of the Second Amendment as if it's on the religious authority of a benevolent deity.

I don't believe in benevolent deities. I do believe in the Constitution, though.

Can you explain to me why, even though the word "abortion" appears nowhere in the Constitution, the Constitution guarantees a woman's right to have an abortion, while the Second Amendment, which explicitly says people have the right to keep and bear arms, doesn't mean she can actually keep and bear arms?
