E10 Fuel - Worthwhile?

All regular unleaded here is at least 10% ethanol. I thought that is the way it is everywhere. Most stations offer 87, 89, and 91.

We offer E15 [87,89,92] here in Washington, and I've been told you can get ~95 on the East Coast.

On that note..

Outside the US, where gasoline prices are artificially held high, the differential between m85 street price and gasoline would be lower on a percentage basis. However, note that in these brief comments, I assume NO subsidy for methanol.

We have very cheap gas. Gas in say, Norway, is near 8/gal.

$2.69 a gallon in Tucson today, you can get another $1.00 a gallon off with your Fry's (Kroger) points if you use the grocery store gas station, so $1.69 really, because those points are not good for anything else, and who doesn't eat?

Anyhow, I was pointing out that all gas is E10 or better because I don't think it requires any special seals or anything, that is E85 that needs a slight modification.

Time for a fuel price comparison?
A litre of diesel cost me $2.20 in Scotland ten days ago.
That's a litre.
$8.33 per US gallon.

Of course, the median wage in Scotland is probably 25% higher than in Arizona, so it is more like paying $6 a gallon: still darn expensive!

Lucky you.

$10/gallon gas would save the U.S.
Triple the cost of fuels, and watch the rush toward sane behavior and up-graded technology. Presumably, the extra tax would actually trickle down.

This is a minority opinion over here.

In fact, so far, mostly me.

Assuming the seals and hoses can be changed, you could alter the jetting (I'm assuming you have a carb) to have it run correctly on E10- and only E10.

I had to do this for my carb-equipped motorcycle, although it could not be made to run as well on E10 as E0.

Dave

the XJ-S is all electronic so no messing around with carbs.

Apparently the real problem is how quickly the fuel tank will corrode.

E85 needs more than a slight modification. Aside from material compatibility issues, the volume of fuel required to be injected is much larger with E85 than with straight gasoline so the car needs a new engine management system, a sensor to tell it what mix of alcohol and gasoline is in the tank and larger fuel injectors to be able to supply fuel at the required rate.

Why stop there? Just flat make every gallon of fuel $500, and then cap it to 10 gallons per household per month.

The US would collapse in less then a week.

For a relatively new car, you are probably looking at about $500. It is really not too complicated.

I don't see how this wouldn't put all the working poor in a world of hurt for a long long time.

people would abandon cars and get about on very small capacity motorcycles. Bit like a return to the horse days....

It would be fun..... (says he....trying to make this sound less like hell)

Yeah that's why I'd prefer a move to butanol instead of methanol or ethanol; better energy density, less corrosive and hygroscopic, no bootlegging issues et cetera.

The tank could be pulled and cleaned and lined with properly formulated epoxy, I've done this to repair rusty motorcycle gas tanks.
