I have to say though that I loooove crop circles. I think they are among the best art works in the world today. That's why it misses the point just to roll our eyes at all the true believers out there, I mean I'm just awed and incredibly impressed at the artistry of these formations (although of course the standards are all over the place, some are very very good, others just mediocre).
I don't like to call the artists hoaxers. They are artists, among the best in the world today. There is no display art that can match the agriglyphs, none. When I think of all that is involved in successfully carving these things in the English countryside or wherever else, especially without getting caught, their size, the sheer beauty of many of them, the multiple traditions they draw on, the complex geometry. Do you know how difficult it is to get the formations 'right' and not screw up, especially with multiple circles and in light of the patterned symmetry? It ain't easy I will tell you that much.
I know it can be a pain for the farmers, but the artists actually take considerable care in not damaging the crop too much, the problem comes with all the visitors trampling around in the formations, not walking on the tram-lines, that kind of thing. I also appreciate the artists making these things near the old sacred sites of Britain, it's clever is what I mean. Personally I think these guys are among the best artists in the world today (if not the best), and they don't get near the credit they deserve. And for what reward? Maybe the beauty of the formations is its own reward.. At least we have a record of them.
