Merged Peace President invades Venezuela,/U.S. Forces Capture Maduro

Maybe my understanding of U.S. foreign policy is simplistic, but it seems to me that our occupation of Iraq gave us ISIS and our occupation of Afghanistan gave us the Taliban.
That's not simplistic at all. It requires time travel, since the Taliban were in charge of Afghanistan before we invaded.

It's just adorable that some think this is about drugs.
Indeed, the Orangutan in Chief pretty much said the quiet part out loud.

Is every country free to kidnap citizens of other countries, if they have oil?
Sure, why not. The U.S. Attorney bringing this indictment is Jay Clayton, one of the toadiest of Pres. Trump's toadies. He is in charge of one of the busiest and most important of the U.S. judicial districts, the Southern District of New York. He has no prior experience as a prosecutor.

The indictment appears to justify this action by invoking a U.S. law that determines in which district a criminal action may be brought for actions committed outside any established U.S. judicial district. But as I said, this presumes the persons so charged are within the personal jurisdiction of U.S. law. This jurisdiction is limited to places and circumstances under which U.S. law properly governs people's actions, such as if they are on a U.S.-flagged vessel or on territory controlled by the U.S. government. It does not apply willy-nilly anyplace in the world, and especially not in the sovereign territory of another country.

The indictment is basically a pseudo-legal fig leaf.

It's also adorable that some think the cartels, and the flow of drugs into the U.S. are going to be abated in any way.

This is going to be a mess.

He's gonna get gas below $1.00 a gallon if it kills . . . a whole bunch of people he doesn't care about. Which is nearly everyone else.

So it looks like Trump by his actions has given Putin the justification for invading Ukraine, also the justification for China to take Taiwan. I will wait for Europe to eventually become the 'culture' from Iain.M.Banks scifi novels as everyone else doesn't care about people. We might need an ai for that though.

It might be, we don't know. Or for the cynical amongst us, it's going to get much much worse.

One thing I'll give Venezuela credit for is they didn't lock their people inside their borders, Soviet or North Korea style.
I expect this will lead to a much bigger exodus not a smaller one. Iraq, Libya and Syria should be instructive examples of what happens when countries descend into civil war which is almost certain to happen now.

And worse for Venezuela is that even if the US installed successors are better than Maduro, their legitimacy in the eyes of Venezuelans has been undermined by being installed.

Fat lot of good kissing up to Donald has done her.

She only has the support of 70% of Venezuelans...

She was doomed as soon as she was given Donald's Nobel Prize.

When will the Trumpkins learn licking his balls gets you nothing but humiliation.

Trump on María Corina Machado: "I think it'd be very tough for her to be the leader. She doesn't have the support or the respect within the country. She's a very nice woman but she doesn't have the respect."

If respect is a requirement what is Trump doing being POTUS?

If only we had some kind of historical precedent for how actions like this turn out.

Obviously, the rational thing to do is give the Trump administration the benefit of the doubt because of what a terrific job they’ve been doing in every other facet of governance.

Time will tell. We have no idea what your average person-on-the street in Venezeula thinks due to fear of the Maduro regime. The US invasion didn't happen with at least token support.

that was smarter people making actual attempts

so i'm not sure what the basis would be that things could go better when the demented reality tv president is pulling a pr stunt.
