Windows 10

I do too. Did you wind up with Free Cell still installed after the install of Windows 10?
I run it as a stand alone (on the desktop) that was copied from Win 98. Nothing changed from 7 pro.

ETA: I really don't remember but, It could be a left over from XP. At any rate, I didn't even lose my stats.

Is anyone having the issue where the start bar won't auto hide? This is driving me mad.

Personally, I don't like when it does................(I keep forgetting how to get it back)

FWIW: I have a 32" monitor so this is not an issue...............:)

Upgrade went without a single problem for me.
But today I find out that all my files in One Drive are gone!

Fortunately I back everything up on thumb drives, so I haven't lost anything.

I'll not trust anything to any cloud service.

I see I can get to them through a browser, but not in explorer.

MS got rid of the option for 'pretend' files that download when you use them; you can only have whole folders from OneDrive, and folders you don't have downloaded aren't visible at all on the computer. Maybe that's why? Check in OneDrive settings, right-click the icon in the notification area.

There must be some technical reason for them doing so, because I can't think of any other explanation for taking away a feature.

Pre-emptive edit: Oh, you've worked it out. Oh well, already typed this so-

I'm not a happy camper at this point. It seemed like everything was working OK, then the screen began flashing from black to desktop, and nothing worked. Finally, I was able to get task manager open, and found almost 100% drive activity, and very high processor percentage. I could smell the heat from my computer, likely from an overheated processor.

I managed to find the offending processes: Windows error reporting (which is likely reporting the problems), and particularly the iCloud services. I turned off ICloud in the task manager, and the computer calmed down. I have been googling for this problem, and I am not alone. Here is a video of the screen that someone posted on YT, with some discussion.

This link is to a better discussion.

After an hour of updating to windows 10 I log in and the screen constantly flashes. The cursor is busy and I get no response when I click on buttons on the screen. The keyboard commands don't work either.

I am also seeing other very annoying problems such as difficulty in turning off Windows sounds and a disappearing volume control. The graphics on the programs and option boxes now have a very primitive or old fashioned look, reminds me of OS2, but I guess these can be changed.

In short, the aggravation I'm seeing makes me wonder whether it is worth keeping Windows 10, and I am seriously considering reverting back to Windows 7. There is a 1 month period for going back. I really don't see any great advantages yet, but I am willing to keep an open mind.

I'm glad I sold my Microsoft stock long ago.

I don't know what a "pretend" file is. Can only have whole folders but not documents?

Anyway things are functioning the same for me now that I emptied out my Onedrive contents and put them back in again.

Something strange was bound to happen. My sympathies for people who got real grief.

Well, I took the plunge and upgraded this morning (custom install, so I could turn off the settings I didn't want). Result:
  • On first-sign, the task bar froze (did not respond to clicks). Ctrl-Alt-Del did work; I could run Task Manager (which is reworked).
  • Killing Explorer (and restarting it) in Task Manager did not work.
  • Parts of the Control Panel were accessible; adding new users was not (it, too, froze).
  • Some online searches turned up this: http://www.bidnessetc.com/49429-mic...t-menu-cortana-taskbar-not-working-heres-fix/ - which requires a working task bar.
  • Eventually managed to catch the task bar before it froze, and ran the above fix. Whether that fixed it, or something else, the problem did go away.
  • After that, I had reverb in all sounds played; traced that down to an audio-control program from Gigabyte that is not available for Win10. Removing it fixed that problem.
  • The 'share bandwidth' - more specifically, 'Updates from more than one place' - is not shown during the install process. By default, it is 'Get updates from Microsoft, and get updates from and send updates to PCs on my local network, and PCs on the Internet'.

The custom install does allow you to choose your default programs (mail, calendar, browser), although the initial settings, naturally, are for the Microsoft choices.

To fix the update problem, open the Start menu (is it still called that?), select Settings, then Update & security; in the Windows Update panel, select Advanced options. There, finally, you will be able to change this setting.

I am of the opinion that the default option is a mistake - where I live (in Canada), most broadband connections have volume caps, some of which are fairly small. Having this leach your bandwidth without your knowledge (unless you research or go exploring in settings) is not acceptable.

Since most people are not having the problems you're having, there's likely something about your specific hardware setup that does not agree with the new OS. If Windows 7 worked fine with it, just revert.

I just did mine this afternoon. The only slight glitch I noticed was that my graphics card was not working, but when I pulled it up on the Device Manager it said I just needed to re-start.
Did so and it works fine.
Also, when I started up a Steam game (Fallout3) to try it out, I got the silly thing to join the "Windows Live" thing..... I just X'd out of that and the game ran fine.

I should probably just find the post where they explained the change, but basically in the last version you could have Onedrive files as either downloaded on the computer or shortcuts, which looked like the real file to programs but took up no space on the computer until you tried to open them. (E.G. want to be able to see your gigabytes of photos on your tablet with tiny storage? No problem, the thumbnails and metadata work, but it's not filling the drive! Want that awesome photo from the middle of one of those folders? No problem, just double click it!)

Now the files either exist normally or aren't present at all, and you can only change that setting by folders and not individual files. Want to be able to see your gigabytes of photos on your tablet with tiny storage? You can't. Want that awesome photo from the middle of one of those folders? Tough, have fun manually downloading and uploading any changes if you want to keep it in sync, or messing around with your folder structure to accommodate it.

Silver linings - they've brought back the option to be able to access every file on your computer remotely via OneDrive (on the web), which isn't a replacement but is handy as long as your other computer is on.

Getting a new computer. Planning ahead, I want to kill Cortana. Her very existence offends me as a PlayStation fanboy. Along the way it looks like I found how to remove other stock bloat.

http://superuser.com/questions/949569/can-i-completely-disable-cortana-on-windows-10

I thought about getting W7, but I realised that one of my games won't run on the latest technology of even 64bit W7 so I am always going to need to virtualise anyway.

Fascinating thing: On my system, it says 'Cortana isn't supported in the region and language you've selected'.

The language? English (default is English US). The region? Canada.

So apparently Cortana doesn't know about Canada. It does, however, know about the UK.

Bloody imperialists.

Clicking on 'Why' in the Search settings opens this link: http://www.bing.com/search?q=Why+is...7-8c09-e6baf8ca78cc" lang:"en-us"&form=S00028 - which gives the following summary:
MS said:
Why isn't Cortana in my region or language?
Cortana is available in the following countries/regions: China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States. Cortana is available in these languages: Chinese (Simplified), English (U.K.), English (U.S.), French, Italian, German, and Spanish

To use Cortana, all these settings must be set to the same language:
Languages (this is your device language)
Speech language (language pack must be installed)
Country or region
Note: If you change your region, you might not be able to shop at Store, or use things you've purchased, like memberships and subscriptions, games, movies, TV, and music.
