Welcome!Hello,

After a few weeks of search & error, now everything runs smoothly.
Windows 12 will be out RSN.
Here's anew one for me. After a few days away, switched on recently updated Win 10 PC after it having been off (not hibernated or sleeping) and found it stuck on the lock screen wall paper with a still correct working clock (and date). No response from mouse nor keyboard. Tried several on/off restarts via the power button. Replaced battery in Mouse. Still no response. Looked on my tablet and eventually found a suggestion to try.
While screen is showing, unplug the PC from the power by removing the cord so it goes off.
Waited a few seconds to replug and start up.
Back to normal responsive boot up and user login screen,
Might help someone else.
Never happened with Win 7. Just sayin'.
Windows 10 will automatically download on to Windows 7 or 8 PCs
Company to make Windows 10 a ‘recommended update’ next year, meaning those running updates will have it downloaded and will be prompted to install
Terry Myerson, executive vice president of Microsoft’s Windows and Devices group said: “If you choose to upgrade (our recommendation!), then you will have 31 days to roll back to your previous Windows version if you don’t love it.”
Switched over last night only to discover that Win10 borks SQL Server for users on the same machine. Which is my case since I run SQL Server on my PC to support my own applications. Microsoft apparently acknowledges the issue. There is a work-around, which I'll try this afternoon.
The forum I was reading to get this info stated that installing SP1 did not fix the problem which is why I mentioned the work-around. However, I decided last night to install SP1 just to see for myself and, I'll be darned, it did fix the problem. My GUESS is that the Win10 upgrade somehow fritzed the SQL Server Browser and that SP1, as a side effect, fixed that problem as well.Link to the work-around?
Let us know how that works out. I'm getting ready to do some stuff with SQL Server on WIN10 mysef,
I have just had the dreaded "Start Menu & Cortana Critical error message" Total pain to get rid of. Seems like the Microsoft response is poor for this and there are seemingly multiple random fixes.

Let me know the answer if you find it, sounds like the problem my mum has.
It didn't even bother with drivers -- as soon as I plugged the dongle in the mouse worked!I have just had the dreaded "Start Menu & Cortana Critical error message" Total pain to get rid of. Seems like the Microsoft response is poor for this and there are seemingly multiple random fixes.
Full restart rather than just logging off has always fixed it for me.
