Windows 10

I think that if you're not paranoid about things like this, you're not being careful enough. Just go through the settings and turn off what you don't like. In my case, I turned off pretty much every kind of information sharing. I don't even use a Microsoft account.

I'm not a typical user, though -- Windows is my tertiary OS (well, maybe more like secondary, lately).

Anyway, check the screenshots Childlike Empress posted upthread. You should find them useful in deciding what settings you might want to change.

I'm making a little list. ;)

Something odd has happened since upgrading to 10. I was having problems with the display on my laptop. It would go blank occasionally. I'd have to hit Fn+F6 to get it to come back on. Sometimes I would have to hit it repeatedly to get it to stay on. It would often go blank when I adjusted the angle of the screen, so I thought the cable might be going bad. But sometimes it would go out for no apparent reason.

I've got some Linux distros on a USB that I occasionally run, and I'd have the same problem, so it wasn't a software issue with Windows.

But since upgrading to 10, I haven't had any problem with it. Strange.

Could be the updated drivers fixed some problem.

Win 10 has such awesome power that it welded the broken wire.

I've got another element in the "Whose turn to upgrade?" story.

My wife's compouter has been gathering dust for months. It's the same make and model as mine.

I wanted to get it caught up and upgrade ready. When I booted it and got on line I checked for updates. I was notified that the last update had been back in February and there were 99 'important' ones that needed to be downloaded and installed.

So I told it to go ahead, and knowing that it was going to take quite a while I went on with chores, shopping, etc. and let it churn away on its own.

Bear in mind that "back in February" means the machine had never gotten the little upgrade icon in the notification tray, and thus never agreed to the upgrade early to 'get in line'.

When I got home, put away groceries, blah, blah, I checked it out. Told me to reboot. I did, and Win 10 had been installed.

No waiting. No notice it was ready to upgrade.

So I'm still a bit confused about the people who are saying they can't upgrade yet.

I've reverted both machines back to 8.1. Here's why...

  • Sony advised me to on the Vaio Pro 13
  • Kaspersky 2015 can't advise Win 10 that it controls security. It ends up brawling with Defender
  • Latest Asus GTX 960 drivers are still flakey on Win 10

After installing the 960 drivers shut down stopped working correctly. I hoped reverting to Win 8.1 would solve the problem. No such luck.

It does actually shut down, but the fans are still blowing and the lights are on. The power and reset buttons are non-responsive. Holding the power button down for approx 5 seconds will cause a proper shut down.

On powering up again Windows doesn't say the system wasn't shut down properly.

I upgraded the BIOS in an effort to fix this, bricked the machine until I realised it was merely trying to boot off my back up driver, and discovered it made no difference.

I've checked all the OS power settings and they're fine. I'm reasonably certain its a BIOS issue.

I'm sure I'll eventually find a solution, but all suggestions welcome.

Oh, I just recalled another issue I had during the upgrade. It would fail if I had all my USB connected stuff plugged in. Once I unplugged everything except my mouse and keyboard, the upgrade proceeded. After the upgrade, I plugged everything back in and everything seems to work.

I did have to restore the default printer. "Devices and Printers" is kind of hidden in 10. A link to it would be more useful than those animated tiles shown in the start menu. I am trying to give the new UI a try before I get give into the urge to start customizing it to work more like XP.
