so if the next TAM is held in Vegas, where should it be?

I liked the Flamingo as it has some sad little penguins that look like PETA are going to break them out any minute.

Just make sure that any we discuss will actually BE there this time next year. Stardust won't, according to the staff (which didn't enthuse them to great heights of service either, btw).

Perhaps one of the hotels off the Strip slightly may be able to put up good bargains?

Maybe TAM5 should be a special international event and it's location moved to say, hmmmm... I don't know .... maybe Australia?

Yes, an excellent suggestion by myself if I do say so. Australia would be an excellent venue for this. Some very nice convention locations in tropical QLD. I'm sure excursions out to the reef to see all the pretty coloured fish would be popular.

Hopefully not at one that charges hourly rates.

I think they have a hotel in mind, but I'm not sure which it is.

Not to add to the Rumor-mongering (after all, would I monge you?) but I think I heard The Riveria mentioned as a possiblity. Same general locale as the Stardust, probably same general prices.

We shall see.

I'll throw it out again - the Orleans. Can handle conventions, is a nice hotel, offers very reasonable rates, has lots of non-gambling entertainment (such as movie theaters and a massive 10 pin bowling alley) has a wicked pool area, and has a good free shuttle service since its an off-strip property.

There are many, many, hotels in Vegas with convention facilities to hold large meetings. If you want me to prove it...the 40 anniversary Star Trek convention will be there in August. I went to the 35th annual, which was held at the Alexis Park (across the street from the Hard Rock) and it was fine too.

If the crowd is big enough, and it will be, the meeting facilities are free, and you can get a discounted rate on the rooms.

We won't have any trouble finding a place. Maybe we should have it at the Rio and book a few TAM-only P&T shows. I'd be down with that.

What is the name of the one next to the Stardust? On the south side? Because I think it is also getting knocked down. I think it's the one that says "Cold Beer & Dirty Girls" on the marquee.

are they tearing down Circus Circus? I hurried over because I had seen it in a James Bond film. I was never more disappointed. Ick.

I'd like the one with bowling and non gambling stuff. Indoor pool for Rebecca? Anyway, I'm sure JREF has some place in mind, but I thought it would be fun to speculate.

Wherever it is, I think I should get booked for a concert there.

IIRC, Circus Circus is due to be renovated in about 18 months. Whether that means a complete flattening with explosives, I don't know. They certainly aren't doing any repairs to the existing outbuildings, and there was a lot of machinery flattening a whole bunch of buildings on the same block. It's currently a bit of a nondescript, rambling and confusing rabbit-warren altogether, so I'm suspecting the "upgrades" will be something fairly major when they come. They HAVE to compete with the likes of Bellagio, Paris, etc, to stay in the game.

The only disadvantage of off-Strip locations is that it would be...well, duh...OFF Strip! Not quite as convenient to Peppermill!

They'd never go for it.

When it was held at the Tuscany (good location, good price), every b****** that it was too far away.

The Orleans, while a good place to visit, wouldn't really be a good idea for the many TAM attendees who rely on walking to do their sightseeing.

But, I love their movie theatre.

Party at my place if you book at the Alexis Park.

Oh, and the big magic convention is held at the Riv, so they've got some loyal customers. The Transexual convention too!

The Rio is a beautiful property - and its all-suites - I used to stay there quite often when it was new - they were very generous with the free room offers. But post-WSOP they don't need us little guys anymore and now its just another expensive Harrah's Corp. property. Anyways - I think budget-conscious is a major factor for the TAMs - and I highly doubt you'd get the Rio for $60/$90 a night as we did the Stardust. Plus, its a little off-strip - you can walk to Palms, Gold Coast and Bellagio if you're up for it, but generally you're cab-sharing or shuttling.

The Frontier (Dirty girls and cold beer) - I think (hope) its slated for the wrecking ball, and it is definitely high on the 'ick!' factor. Unless you're a little bit country - well, a LOT bit country, I wouldn't wish that place on anyone. Although it was amusing to stagger in there and watch drunken cowboys attempt to ride the mechanical bull. I felt like bursting into a chorus of 'Oklahoma!' - could've been the MGD...

The Riv - no problem with that property. Its a bit older like the Stardust, but they have reasonable rates and good amenities.

The LV Hilton has surprisingly reasonable rates for the quality of its rooms. Its a bit off-strip but not a whole lot off-strip - and it does have the ultra-cheesy 'Star Trek Experience' thingy.

Circus Jerkus - If it wasn't for the many people I have come to know from the last TAM - I simply would not attend ANY event held at the Pepto-Bismol palace. TAM might drag me out for it - but I would be highly unamused. Indeed - even post-renovation I wouldn't set foot in there. There is nothing more depressing in Vegas than returning to your room at 3am with a moderate buzz on and watching the hordes of abandoned children hanging out in the hallways waiting for their parents to finish shoving their college savings and the next two mortgage payments down the throat of a $1 Double Diamond machine. Plus their buffet is rumoured to be a weapon of mass destruction.

Note - everyone is still talking about North(ish) Strip locations. Assuming that the teardown of Stardust and Frontier do go ahead - there isn't much left up there on the strip unless you're going to hike down to Treasure Island / Venetian etc... So - off-strip properties MAY be worthwhile, since the argument against south-strip has generally been price. If we stay at the Riv and all there is in the neighborhood is the Peppermill, a 10 minute walk to the LV Hilton, and vacant lots, the arguments for off-strip (like the Orleans!)sound more compelling...

North Strip only has Fremont St, which is "everything", yeah, but nothing outstandingly special. And between there and the action further south is a mile or so of "no mans' land". At least the Deuce runs that far and back.

What's down the far south end of town, anyone? Any deals likely there?

We also need to remember why we would be in Vegas in the first place - to do the TAM convention. If we were there primarily to tour the Strip and use the facilities there, that might make it a different decision. So perhaps a little obstruction to just buggering off in a hurry from the TAM venue might be a good thing? (Don't hate me!)

Isn't part of the reason to have it in Vegas is because of its attractions? Why have a convention in a city like Vegas then set up "obstructions" to wandering around places like the Strip? May as well just have it in another city then.
