War on Christmas

A problem indeed surfaces, almost every time, when one religion tries diplaying something.

But a simple greeting is something different. I can't see why everyone can't accept someone elses greeting. If it applies; good. If it don't?; so what...no harm done. A person can get ridiculous, you know, regarding how you respond to greetings. What if you decided to come up to someone and simply say "Hi,...nice day today, eh?" And the person responded with a scowl and said, "Heh Bub...was I talking to you?"

I agree with you completely, Iamme. How could anyone take offense at a cheerful holiday greeting from someone of a different faith or culture? It wouldn't even have to be a holiday greeting, just a kind word mouthed in sincerity. Most people don't stop to think how far a kind word and an honest smile can go - although to be fair, they seem to realize it more around this time of year.

And that is exactly how I go about surviving on this JREF board. I can have people condemn me...people who have even said things like they have a serious medical condition, and they lamblast me...but I will still wish them well.

You're a much better person than I am. :)

I frequently use my JREF frustrations to fuel some uncomplimentary caricatures of the unsavory types. ;) Still, I'll have to admit that I've gained newfound respect for many of the people here who I thought were unwavering, conservative types. The human angle is sometimes depressing, sometimes sobering and always enlightening, it pays to be nice to the nice.
 
Does anyone else remember the old song of over 50 years ago "Happy Holidays', nobody had a problem then.

If the x-mas tree is not a "religious item," then why is it that it is only really christians who are hell bent on having them there? This is just like the claim that "under God" in the pledge isn't that big of a deal, because it is "ceremonial deism." Oddly, however, try to take it out and all of a sudden our country is apparently overrun by ceremonial deists.

Granted, there aren't a lot of druids around, but clearly, the rabbi doesn't see a christmas tree as non-religious.

The holiday trees that went away in the middle of the night are back.

Monday night, Port of Seattle staff began putting up the trees they earlier had removed from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The trees had come down Friday night after a local rabbi requested that a Hanukkah menorah also be displayed, and Port officials had said the threat of a lawsuit left them without enough time to consider all the issues.

Merry/Happy/Joyeux/Feliz Christmas/Kwanzaa/Hanukkah/Eid/Ramadan/Noel/Navidad, everybody!
 
You know, for a staff that apparently doesn't have enough time to accomodate all the potential requests to put up displays for other religions in the northwest (the original argument against allowing a menorah), they have wasted a lot of time taking down and putting up christmas trees.

yeah, accomodating jewish religious symbols would overly burden their already busy staff, but they can apparently find the time to put up and take down trees twice.

I am trying to remember how long the Holiday season was, 50 years ago. These days it now starts August 15, at Menard's; a 3 season holiday!! Humbug!!

Every once in a while, I can't take it...maybe due to how I feel, and I go off on a tirade. But generally, I have a lot of patience. I have had people tell me, who know me...who know what kind of work I do...they can't figure out how I can have the patience I do in trying to do certain frustratring tasks. But I do have a threshhold though. When I reach that threshhold, I REALLY blow a gasket.

What I fail to grasp regarding this brouhaha, is why do people bring up the fact that you can't have one religion displaying things and leave all the other religions out? Here is why I dont' get it: The Christmas season is for Christians, because that is their Holiday Season. The Jews overlap the Christians Christmas season with their own Hannukah season. So....

Let the Christians have their trees and let the Jews have their Menoras.

But why the heck do we have to put on display, representations of every faith in the world...WHEN IT IS NOT ANY HOLIDAY SEASON FOR THAT RELIGION?!
