Vancouver skeptics

I'm happy with wherever. I live in English Bay, so as long as I can walk there, I'm happy.

I think there's also some places on Denman/Beach that have patios that are decent, but I haven't actually been there yet.

ETA: I signed up for the Meetup/people who are interested. I noted that there was someone named CrystalDragon. I have a feeling that they might be confused as to what sort of group they're signing up for.

The Yaletown Brewing Company is a fair walk from where you are, but still walkable.

I'll planning to be in Seattle mid-August for the Joint Statistical Meetings so I'd be interested in taking the short drive northward depending on dates, activities, cost, etc. It's about 140 miles, er, 225 kilometers from Seattle but I'd be willing to make the drive...

Of course, the nearly 420 miles, er, 675 kilometers back to Pullman later that week might kill me...

Damn your metric system, do you at least have pints in your brewpubs or will I have to drink liters instead?

OK: I've created a meetup entry on the meetup.com website for July 8th, 8pm. Let's see if it attracts the attention of people who are not on the JREF board.

I'm thinking even a one-time use of meetup.com should rope most of these people into the JREF or BCSkeptics zone of influence, and we won't require it for future meetings.

I've noticed 11 people have signed up on the meetup.com site. Other than blutoski, none of the names seem familiar to JREF.

So, just for curiousity sake, if you're coming tomorrow night, then let yourself be known.

I will be there!

Okay, hopefully I remember.

Does anyone have a photo? How will I know who's who?

Gah, I just noticed this thread. I'd love to get together with Vancouver JREFers, but I've already got plans tomorrow. Next time, though!

PM'd you my photo. I'll do that for anyone else who asks, but I won't post it on the board as we all know that this place is full of stalkers, and my boyish good looks make me easy prey!

Hope y'all have a great time... I propose a repeat-meet in early September - I'll be in town post TAM-cruise-thingy for three weeks.

Willing to host a BBQ if people are willing to go to (gasp!) Surrey...

Yes, I'm familiar with this Surrey place of which you speak. I don't go there though. I'm scared.

But seriously, sounds like a great idea. Too bad you can't make it tomorrow night, but September sounds good.

My avatar on the meetup website is a photo. I'll go a bit early to make sure we get a table for 8pm. I've already replied to a couple of PMs about this: I'll wear a white Adidas T. Also: I'll have a little black notebook with "Skeptics" written on it.

I'll probably be the only person geeky enough to sit in the pub with a notebook and pen, so I'm pretty sure I'll stand out.

Good point about the 'accept' list from meetup.com. JREF people seem to be in the minority, which is interesting. I'm a little concerned about one chap, whose other 'meetups' look weird.

I've also asked Barry Beyerstein if he wants to drop by. He's a CSICOP founder, and always has good stories. I told him this isn't a BCSkeptics event, and he understands.

One of the items on my little 'agenda' is for those who show up to the July meeting to talk about a future meeting. September sounds like a good time to propose. Which three weeks?

I return from the cruise Sept 3rdish and will depart Sept 23rdish. So anytime in between would work for me. Have lots of space, and my place is 2 blocks from a skytrain stop, so easy for people to commute. Also easy if post-BBQ we want to go somewhere else.

Just reporting in after our meeting:

There were about eight of us there, everybody found something to talk about, and there were no fisticuffs, and nobody's suing, so I call this a success.

Feedback was pretty uniform: perhaps a pub environment was suboptimal. We'll see what we can do next time. I'm suggesting a September date for another meeting.

ETA: Palimpsest/others: no need to monitor this thread. If you can subscribe to an RSS feed, I'll put it on the bcskeptics.info/calendar xml.
