Trump's Second Term

Weren't the bombing raids on on the D Day beaches relatively ineffective?

Well, D-Day did benefit greatly from the preceding allied bomber offensive deliberately exhausting the Luftwaffe as well as attacking German industry so, without wishing to diminish the bravery of the B2 crews, there's a parallel with Iran's air defenses having been suppressed by Israel before this attack.

No point overthinking it though, it's not a carefully thought through thesis, D-day is just a lazy go-to comparison for anything you want to hype as the biggest bestest thing ever.

The D-Day bombing isn't a good comparison. Sinking the Tirpitz with a Grand Slam or smashing railway tunnels with a Grand Slam is a closer comparison.

Rep. Keith Self on Trump bombing Iran: "There has been nothing like this in the world since D Day back in 1944 ... truly amazing."

More importantly, D-day was followed up by a months-long military campaign against a foe as the US pushed through Europe.

Or is Keith Self warning us that the US is now going to be stuck in a months-long conflict on the ground?

This I agree with. Comparing the bombing raid of the B2 bombers to the Normandy invasion is absurd.

I guess one could argue that in terms of strategic effects, this accomplished a lot, very fast, with little risk. I'm sure Eisenhower and Montgomery would have given a nut each, to have this much impact on Germany's strategic military-industrial complex, for this little effort...

... But yeah, it's a huge stretch, to the point of not being worth the bother.

It is kind of a big deal, though. It should probably be compared to something. My votes would be Operation El Dorado Canyon or Operation Black Buck.

Only time will tell - the situation with Iran was entirely predictable before, now everything is uncertain.
To say that a lot was accomplished is very much counting your chickens before they are hatched.

D-Day - you mean Donald-Day?

We don't know that it has any strategic effects apart from making the USA look like terrorists.
