Europe could do it by forming some kind of mutual defence organisation where all members sign a treaty to defend each other. They could let Ukraine join the Treaty organisation.

You're proposing another treaty alliance similar to NATO except without US membership? Otherwise, how would guarantees of Ukranian security be implemented? And if Ukraine were a member of this new alliance, if any of the fighting spilled over to another country (e.g., Poland or Lithuania), wouldn't it become a NATO issue?

The US president appoints members to the Kennedy Center board. It's been that way from the beginning. Since a president had never fired anyone from the board, there is no court case that has established whether a president can legally fire a board member.
