You misunderstand the nature of my concern. I just think it's a bad pun. Not terrible, as puns go. But also not great. But now that you mention it, I guess most of the nicknames proposed in this thread have been bad puns.

So, my apologies. If "Been-A-Dick Donald" tickles your fancy, go for it.

But you may want to consider buying yourself a new pearl necklace. The one you're currently sporting is starting to wear quite thin and may fall apart when you least expect it.

Giving personal opinions on the quality of the nicknames being put forth is a totally appropriate way to participate in this thread.

Clutching at pearls seems a lot more serious reaction than this thread deserves. I assure it's a lot more serious than my reaction to this thread. Is that the nature of your concern? I'm not taking this thread seriously enough? I'm taking it too seriously?

You're mad about that someone has a low opinion of "been-a-dick donald" as a nickname, but somehow I'm the one with the pearl-clutching problem? Maybe worry about finding a better nickname? Or else just make peace with the fact that this is the best you've got? I dunno.
 
I enjoy both puns and, sometimes, sarcasm. What I don't enjoy is the seemingly intentional oppositional and argumentative position that some posters seem to take on almost every occasion. It gets very tiresome.

A page or so ago, I told you why I thought it was a bad pun. Entirely the tense. But I should probably I feel like it's a bad pun, since it's a subjective thing, anyway. For me, the tense puts it into almost-but-not-quite territory, an uncanny valley of pundom.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this thread plays out this week. Will it move on to exciting new nickname ideas? Boring new nickname ideas? A sidebar about how puns work and the subjective nature of comedy?

Your ability to rationalize is amazing. Transparent, but amazing. The tense is what makes the pun work and not what you were complaining about. Your argument was that it meant that Trump was no longer a dick, which of course, he is and the pun doesn't mean that at all. You then shifted that the nickname wasn't descriptive enough. Having been shown that that interpretation doesn't even make sense, you had to fall back on "well, it's a bad pun."

But, yeah, subjectivity. :rub:

From your first post in this thread to your last (to date) in it, you've done nothing but criticize its very raison d'être. It's not a serious thread discussing a serious topic; it's fluff, nonsense. A way to blow off steam, frustration. So why is it necessary to pick apart every proffered pun or nickname if not just be contrarian?

Maybe US Politics needs a Trump Hate subforum, like CT has a 9/11 subforum.

Also, at the risk of sounding contrarian, I actually don't pick apart every proffered nickname. Most I don't comment on. Some I've liked, and said so.

In any case, US Politics is for political discussion. If you just want a place to blow off steam, I recommend Forum Community. Or a private Facebook group.

Or Twitter. Can you imagine if one of these nicknames got a hashtag and started trending?

I'm not taking this thread seriously at all. A casual thread about political nicknames gets some casual ribbing about the quality of some of its nicknames.

It really seems like you're coming from a place where people aren't allowed to have opposing viewpoints on a forum for political discussion. You're allowed to post stuff I disagree with, but somehow I'm not allowed to disagree with it. That makes no sense at all. Anyway, I'll leave this thread alone for, say, a fortnight. It can be your safe space to blow off anti-Trump steam. Enjoy!
