US President Donald Trump says transgender people cannot serve in "any capacity" in the military.

As well as the whole message being the usual ill-informed reactionary nonsense, the thing I find very disturbing is his description of what the military should be focused on:

"Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail."

Putting to one side whatever the "tremendous medical costs" would be, I thought that the military should be focused on keeping the US safe, not on "decisive and overwhelming victory"

Putting to one side whatever the "tremendous medical costs" would be, I thought that the military should be focused on keeping the US safe, not on "decisive and overwhelming victory"

What about our veterans? Look at all the costs they create, and most of them are completely unable to serve any more! The military should focus on kicking ass, and not pampering those who were stupid enough to get injured. Helping injured soldiers who are unable to return to service is a waste and is not helping us win.

I do love how the modern world causes you so much angst. All those women and non-whites you have to deal with, many in positions of power and you can't do anything about it.

Just to reassure myself, I went to check the UK position.

The Army welcomes transgender personnel ... Transgender soldiers serve throughout the Army playing their part in the country’s security.

Now, I wouldn't be surprised if there were many examples of difficulties and issues with turning that aim into a reality in the real world of military service (any members have direct experience?) but at least we have our eyes on the prize.

31 years of service - 29 of them with women allowed to serve in combat arms, 26 of them with homosexuals allowed to openly serve. Combat effectiveness has not suffered.

I've seen what happens when the values of a military unit do not match those of society- you get the Canadian Airborne Regiment and the Somalia Incident.
