Things we have in common

One other thing, I don't know if it's a clear majority or not, but it seems to me there is above average bipartisan support for legalized recreational drugs.

Anyone agree? Disagree?
Agree with what? That there's a clear majority of us who support leglization of recreational drugs? Or individually agree that recreational drugs should be legalized?

Either. What do you think?

This is one of the issues that I meant when I mentioned our libertarian tendency.

Another issue is the Kelo land grab what almost universally condemned.

BTW, I support your effort to find common ground among us but the reality is that agreeing is boring. It's probably a good idea for some more contentious issues.

I agree with you, agreement is boring. I come here to argue, and I purposefully seek out those I disagree with, and don't often exchange messages with those I agree with the most.

At the same time, it's good to keep a sense of perspective. We highlight our differences all the time. Reminding ourselves of our similarities can depersonalize some of hte conflicts and bring home that even the most ardent adversaries might get along just fine if they met in real life.

I think there are enough drugged, distracted, and otherwise incompetent drivers on the road already without adding to the number of people who are already trying to kill me.

Add "I only had a couple of joints" or "I only had a couple of snorts" or "I only had a couple of hits" to to the classic excuse, "I only had a couple of beers..."

And here I thought you were snubbing me! :D

Look, you guys are ticking me off by being so stubborn. I'm right, just admit it.

Yeah - we all seem to agree that Manny's idea to cut the $200 billion earmarked for Katrina disaster relief to $100 billion, with the proviso that the money go directly to the refugees, is the best idea since peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Discussion in the thread about whether Nagin is trying to kill everyone in N.O. - I don't know how to link to an individual message - sorry.

Manny's got Genii, JJ, Shemp, Fishbob, and me signed on. When was the last time all of us agreed on anything?

Hey, just fyi, at the bottom ov every post above the line of blue buttons that say things like "profile", "PM", "search" ect, is a line of RED text that says things like "nominate this post", "link to this post", and "report this post to a moderator." Clickig on the "link to this post" text wll bring up a box that has the address of that specific post that you can just cut and paste any way you like.

I think there is widespread agreement here that amending the U.S. Constitution to ban flag desecration is stupid.

That our political leaders should have good scientific advisors.

That unicorns can be both pink and invisible.

A drunk driver rear-ended a van which plowed into my girlfriend - in my car! - last friday night. The drunk was so frikkin wiped out she didn't even brake before she hit the van at approximately 30-40 MPH, she barely could walk...I hopped a cab to the accident scene and arrived as the two occupants of the van and my girlfriend were on backboards being put into ambulances... the cops asked the drunk "have you had anything to drink tonight?", and she replied "just a couple", no word of a lie...towhich the other cop said "that was after the 8 or 9 drinks before... right?".

Needless to say they cuffed her and threw he into the back of the cop car like a sack of garbage.

In britian drink driveing is pretty much under control (the figures are still non zero but they have fallen a lot). Drug driving however is becomeing more of an issue.

How is that an excuse? If you are over the limit you are over the limit.

I didn't mean they were justifiable, or legally-exculpating excuses. They are rationalizing excuses, made by the drunk/drugged person to justify, in his own mind, his dangerous behavior.

Drunk/drugged driving should be treated exactly the same way you would treat someone walking down the street randomly firing off a shotgun - an irrational person operating a dangerous weapon.

By rights, she should spend the same amount of time in prison as if she had inflicted the same injuries on your girl friend with a baseball bat.

Hope your GF's okay.
