Cont: The Russian Invasion of Ukraine part 9

I am sure the people now in power knew damn well what they were doing.

Do you mean Trump or Putin wiht that last sentence.
If you mean Putin, you are badly mistaken, It takes time, not just money to modernize a military, and if they reallly wan a force that will deter Putin, they had better begin now.
One problem the Euros have is what amounts to a uninteniional Fifth Column with the Greens and other Pasicist groups who are opposed to ANY Miliary spending.
They started a while back. You might want to read about what Germany is doing with it's new military budget which is primarily being spent within the EU. I'm less familiar with EU Green parties but the UK GReens are pretty solidly behind supporting Ukraine.

So are the German Greens.
They want to increase the military spending/support for Ukraine.

I think most Scandis/Nordics are very well aware of rhe danger posed by Russian imperialism, and actually feel real solidarity with Ukraine. Which gives me a little hope - a commodity otherwise in short supply these days...

icerat, do Ukrainians feel hope? From the outside, the resistance seems as strong as ever, but so many people must duffer from fatigue of all kinds? I fear that the betrayal from the USA must have been very painful, and disheartening?

Comes and goes in waves. The very first time I came to Ukraine was shortly after Oct 7/Gaza - I could sense the despair when everyone just kind of "forgot" about Ukraine. The Zelenskyy @ the White House farce was another low point, and of course the US pulling intel and letting Russia wipe out A LOT of Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk incursion

But now Ukraine has received almost no support from the US for a year and is still standing strong. Russia literally is using horses on the frontline, Ukrainian soldiers are better equipped then ever (but still need more!)

But the most important thing was ironically something Trump did. The Biden "red lines" are gone. Ukraine is hitting back. Hard. Sitting with no power here is so much easier when we have batteries and generators and pretty much everything in civil society still working ... while Russians sit freezing there asses off becase *we hit them too* last night.

Most of Kyiv without power and water this morning. Same in Dnpro and Zaporizhia. Many are without communal heating.
In Kyiv, water is already restored everywhere, heating is expected to be back for most tonight or tomorrow, and good chance we're back to "normal" rolling blackouts tomorrow too.

As long as Europe keeps supporting us with weapons, ammo, and money to keep the bills paid, I have zero doubt Russia will fall before Ukraine does. I think most Ukrainians feel exactly the same way.

Slava Ukraini!

Thank you! I am on the brink of gushing whenever I try to express how much I admire the people, the soldiers, Zelensky, and the ingenuity and agility of the fight you are all putting up, so I hope, and think, you are right about how it will end. Maybe this winter will bring the Russians to their knees.

I hope the desperate shenanigans of Trump - Venezuela, Greenland etc - as he tries to bury the epstein files, won't make the world forget about Ukraine, you are worth our full attention and support.

On a bright note - if/when societal climate collapse happens ... Ukraine will barely notice! We're ready for anything 😎

Trump on Ukraine:

Biden gave them $350 billion, can you imagine? We did not get any of it back, but I did actually, I made a deal for rare earth.

I said, listen, if we go any further, we want rare earth and we want to get our money back, and I made a deal with Ukraine, a very fair deal where we get our money back.

Which is a complete lie.

US has "given" about $187 billion total to Ukraine. Only about $30 billion of that has been actual money. The rest has been old equipment, ammo, even charges for intelligence costs.

And even that has some creative accounting. Initially multiple countires - including the US - were booking old equipment sent to Ukraine at *replacement value* - so an old rusty Bradley IFV that's been sitting in the desert for a decade was being valued at ca $5million. Later they changed to net book value - cost minus deprecation. That's still valuing an unused piece of equipment that will likely sit in the desert forever at over a million dollars *plus* shipping expenses.
