The Origin of Oumuamua

I did start a thread about that.

tl; dr: It's not even certain that what he found actually came from a meteor, nor that it came from the particular meteor that "The U.S. Space Command confirmed with almost near certainty, 99.999%, that the material came from another solar system."

Until two days ago, I figured that was just about the first time he thought he'd found a fragment of aliens. It just didn't seem reasonable to me that he'd find some other...object that he also thought was alien. I just hadn't understood how much of a monomaniac he was.

He wants to be the guy who discovers extraterrestrials. He wants history to associate his name with the discovery of aliens. There is nothing else inside him but this desire. Don't look to him for insight, for astronomical expertise, for cooking tips.

The Daily Fail has this gem today:

"Scientists baffled" is such a lazy, worn-out refrain. Especially when scientists are very much not baffled. Also "reverse thrust" is a lie. The solar wind is causing it to slow down slightly and also causing the tail of the comet to be pushed back. Nothing baffling about it.

The article goes on:

A "chilling warning", Oh Dear!! Whatever shall we do??!? It's about to release its payload of mini-probes.
I suppose that with a "chilling warning" we might freeze.

The Mysterious Interstellar Object May Be Slamming on the Brakes, Scientist Says

Or then again, maybe not. (The scientist is our old friend. ;) )
When are they going to stop interviewing this ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ clown? This is the kind of ◊◊◊◊ that belongs on some dodgy Russian website!

We sit here and laugh at him, but there are many impressionable people who read this crap and believe it because they don't know any better. This butthole is doing a great disservice to science! But of course, it brings millions of ad views, so they'll never stop!

I think you just answered your own question.

OMFG!!! SOMEBODY MAKE HIM GO AWAY!!!

It's blue!!! It must be a spaceship!!! This likely-AI-written article says so!!! We're all doomed!!!

'Alien spaceship' is changing course and speeding up on way to Earth and no one knows why

Boffins are baffled by the Manhattan-sized space rock that is hurtling through space and heading towards Earth and now it has bizarrely changed course after picking up speed

A mystery object feared to be an alien spacecraft has "unexpectedly picked up speed" as it hurtles through space — and towards Earth. The interstellar object known as 3I/ ATLAS has been bursting through the Solar System at 130,000mph.

But boffins at Nasa say its speed has now soared to approximately 152,000mph. And they have noticed an "extra kick" moving the 12-mile craft off its predicted path, which can't be explained by the sun's gravity.

The sun contains almost all of the solar system’s mass, meaning its weight pulls all the planets together in a predictable motion scientists can measure. But these new movements by 3I/ATLAS appear to defy our laws of gravity.

While Nasa believes the sun's gravity is mainly responsible for the speed boost, scientists are having a harder time figuring out what has caused 3I/ATLAS to noticeably shift away from it.

Most experts are convinced the Manhattan-sized space rock was a comet believed to have travelled to the Sun from another star in a journey lasting billions of years.

But theoretical physicist Avi Loeb warned it could be an "extraterrestrial artefact" about to make first contact. And he argues the acceleration and the object's striking blue hue might mean it is actually artificial.

P.S.: Bonus points for calling scientists "boffins."

Here's what Google's AI has to say about the Daily Star:
The Daily Star (UK)
Credibility: The UK edition is generally considered unreliable and is known for publishing sensationalized content, celebrity gossip, and "fake news".
Reputation: It is a tabloid newspaper with a reputation for publishing false or fabricated information and has been ranked very low in surveys regarding trustworthiness and impartiality.
Focus: It focuses more on entertainment and "taking the piss" out of politicians rather than serious news coverage.
Conclusion: It is not a credible source for reliable news.

First Evidence for a Non-Gravitational Acceleration of 3I/ATLAS at Perihelion

Even Loeb admits:
The reported level of non-gravitational acceleration corresponds to a modest spatial deviation of order ten times the radius of the Earth over a period of a month, insufficient to bring 3I/ATLAS significantly closer to any Solar System planet from its original gravitational path.
(Emphasis mine) In other words, the comet is outgassing, as expected. Outgassing is a lot like when you fill up a balloon with air and then let it go. Anyone who has ever done this knows that the balloon will then fly off in some direction as the air is pushed out of it.

He goes on to add:
Alternatively, the non-gravitational acceleration might be the technological signature of an internal engine.
But no. The acceleration is "insufficient to bring 3I/ATLAS significantly closer to any Solar System planet from its original gravitational path" and therefore, unlikely to be something produced by an engine because what is the point of wasting fuel to change course ever so slightly in a way that doesn't bring it "significantly closer to any Solar System planet"?

It's a natural comet doing natural comet things.

AI/Atlas

This is a well reasoned discussion of the object. It's long but points out what makes the object interesting without going too far into the weeds.

No, that is utter nonsense.

I watched the first 45 seconds and reached this conclusion. I watched 15 more seconds to make it a full minute, and my initial judgement didn't change.

I'm willing to be open-minded and I gave it a chance, but when you tell lies in the first minute, I'm out.

I'm not surprised there would be skeptics here. The talk did not once say there is evidence the object was anything but unusual and natural. I don't know what you are referring to as "lies". I'll note your opinion.

I looked at his other videos. When the titles includes "scientists cannot explain it" it tells me that the source is not very credible. Plus it is a new channel that talks only about the one subject. Conclusion: Get your information elesewhere.

Here's the automatically generated transcript of the first minute of narration:
Something is wrong with the comet from another star. China's Mars Orbiter just sent back images that don't make sense.

I've highlighted the issues I had with the first minute of the video.
Alternatively, here's what it says in the video description:
China’s Tianwen-1 just captured the closest images ever of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS — and what they show has scientists baffled.
After shedding 13% of its mass (about 4 BILLION tons) near the Sun, 3I/ATLAS should have a giant tail.
Instead: no tail, no debris. Where did the mass go?
And that’s only 1 of 10 anomalies breaking every comet rule:
Ecliptic-aligned trajectory (about 0.2 percent odds)
Sunward jet that defies expectations
About 1000× more massive than prior interstellar visitors
Perfectly timed passes of Mars, Venus, and Jupiter during observations
More nickel than iron (industrial-like ratio)About 4 percent water (atypically low)
Unprecedented polarization signature
Aligned with the 1977 “Wow!” signal direction
Record-fast brightening
No tail despite massive mass loss
Each one is unlikely. All ten together? Less than one in ten thousand.
We’re not saying it’s artificial — but something very strange just crossed our Solar System.
The idea that the comet "should" have a massive tail simply isn't true. Compared to comets from our own solar system, those that develop "massive" tails are those that have perihelion distances that take them very close to the sun. They don't have massive tails when they are out in the Oort cloud, for example. This one is both moving faster and even at its closest approach, it is farther from the sun than earth's orbit. Besides, it does have a tail. Saying that there's "no tail" simply isn't true. The "Sunward jet" is explainable for the same reason. It's not close enough to the sun for the solar wind to have much effect on it. All the other stuff is just cherry-picking supposed "anomalies" that aren't really anomalies. The "Ecliptic-aligned trajectory" for example. ATLAS, the telescope that found it, does a survey that looks for asteroids specifically in the ecliptic plane, because those are the ones most likely to present a potential danger to earth.
