The Lanford Experiments

Nolan Coppenger said:
I sent an email to one of the group leaders asking many of the questions brought up here. I received this response today:

Nolan:

Why are you asking all these questions? Do you think I've been dishonest or something? Do you think we'd stoop so low and just CHEAT? Do you realize how much it all COST? Maybe you'd better meditate about this and stop thinking so much and FEEL what the truth is. If you don't like the way things are done in this group you can just leave. Nobody is forcing you to stay, in fact if you're going to be this negative maybe you just don't fit in. Maybe your path leads somewhere else. I'm beginning to think it does. I work very hard on bringing stronger energy into the group and I won't stand for these questions you're asking. What's wrong with you? I'm sensing a LOT of negative energy around you. I don't want that kind of energy in this group so if you can't deal with it I suggest you just leave. In fact I think it's best for all concerned if you DO leave.

Rachael

I believe I have my answer. Thank you to all concerned.

I'm hoping you leave the group too. No one (including those who think they have powers) needs that kind of crap. It's bad enough most of us deal with it at the office.

I don't know if this really warrants a reply of this length but, what the heck...

Nolan:

Why are you asking all these questions?

Translates as: Do not ask questions. Questions may bring you new knowledge we don't like that. Listen only to what we tell you.

I never want to be part of a group where I can't ask questions

Do you think I've been dishonest or something? Do you think we'd stoop so low and just CHEAT?

Nobody was accusing the group of cheating. Maybe being somewhat gullible, but not cheating. Why so defensive?

Do you realize how much it all COST?

What's that got to do with anything? Nolan's trying to save them wasting similar money in the future.
And why did they rent the bloody house for six weeks in the first place?
The experiment could have been done for, er, prety much free.
Spending more needlessly on an experiment doesn't generate more accurate results.
Shoddy protocol? Terrible testing? It doesn't matter because we spent a FORTUNE on renting the location. The results MUST be true.

Maybe you'd better meditate about this and stop thinking so much and FEEL what the truth is.

Uh, isn't that what Nolan has done? He FEELS there is something wrong so he's asking questions.
Oh I forgot rule 1 - No questions.

A group that discourages thinking...? Hmmm... troy jones sounds right about the cult thing.

If you don't like the way things are done in this group you can just leave. Nobody is forcing you to stay, in fact if you're going to be this negative maybe you just don't fit in.

The cult trappings grow.
Translation: You can leave of your own free will but we'll be sure to try and make you feel real bad about it.
Guess it's not a group dedicated to love, understanding and harmony then.

Maybe your path leads somewhere else. I'm beginning to think it does.

And that's a bad thing...?

I work very hard on bringing stronger energy into the group and I won't stand for these questions you're asking.

DING DING DING! We have the 'energy' word bandied about! Danger Will Robinson Danger!
Loony group status... Confirmed.

Nolan, why not point out that your FEELINGS and ENERGY are trying to save the group from being ripped off like gullible idiots.
Or are feelings and energy not to be used for that? Just for feeling kind of ephemeral and floaty and stuff...

What's wrong with you? I'm sensing a LOT of negative energy around you.

Don't worry Nolan, Rachael couldn't detect energy if she sat on a power cable. She doesn't like your dangerous and maverick use of QUESTIONS. All deluded people fear QUESTIONS. QUESTIONS allow information to be transferred and history teaches us that the ignorant and uninformed choose to stay like that in their own protective bubble of stupidity.

I don't want that kind of energy in this group so if you can't deal with it I suggest you just leave. In fact I think it's best for all concerned if you DO leave.

And the crowd goes wild! This is the best thing all round.
Nolan asks a couple of questions about one (very clearly) incompetent test and all of a sudden he's to blame for negative energy? What about Rachael's galloping stupidity - doesn't that give off some kind of negative vibe?

Rachael

If this is all to be believed it sounds like some fairly wealthy group of New Age middle class idiots with too much time on their hands who have decided that they are more spititual and tuned and sensitive etc. than the rest of us so they've formed a little group (how sweet).
But it seems like they might have started taking themselves a little too seriously and now greet every one they meet with an exciting claim as a kindred spirit. Obviously they don't want to test too hard or they will discover that all these people have exactly the same abilities as they do. I.e. none.

They will soon find themselves a much poorer group if they carry on as they have.

Don't want to call attention to themselves? Yes I can see why. Friends, neighbours and relatives laughter carries a long way.

Nolan if this is all true and you are leaving the group I hope you look back on it all and laugh and maybe even tell us all about it one day.

Run for the hills Nolan, but if this person is not a leader, and thus doesn't have the power to insist you leave, you may want everyone else to hear the questions and answer. You may save a few people who can still think for themselves.

I've had another thought about Lanford's amazing ability:

We asked Lanford why there had been three misses, even though the cards he had chosen were extremely similar to the originals. According to Lanford, “Sometimes there's interference. If I get negative energies the glass effects get cloudy, you know, as if someone breathed on it and fogged the glass.”
Okay, so he's saying the clarity of the metal/glass is foggy.
So how does he explain this then:
Plate 2: Five of Clubs Lanford: Four of Clubs
How could he possibly see it was clubs when he couldn't even count the number of blobs in front of him?
How cloudy must something be that you can't count the number of blobs on it? Massively cloudy so that you would just as easily say eight or two. You might feasibly guess clubs if the blobs still looked black but the misses are too close to be convincing.
Again:
Plate 6: Six of Hearts Lanford: Four of Hearts
How would that happen when he was so perfect with the others.

Sounds like he forgot a little, or was introducing deliberate mistakes, but which were unrealistic mistakes.

I would believe it more if the mistakes were clear mistakes - number AND suit wrong - that would imply a really cloudy plate for some reason.
But he couldn't be seen to be THAT wrong, even though it would be more likely - hence the small mistakes attributable to 'deliberate' error or slight memory lapse.

No wonder he turned up so early all jittery - he wouldn't want to leave it too long and forget the cards.

I wonder what the financial investment was by the members. After all, if Rachael happened to be the treasurer . . .?

I bet membership costs, and they were pulling Nolan in with this Lanford trick.

Wait till you hear what it costs to enter the INNER CIRCLE of the High Illuminati for which you have been found worthy. Or, fortunately in Nolan's case, unworthy.

Join the Freemasons -- at least they give to charity.

He could have misinterpreted the 'sign language' being given by, let's say, someone like Rachael. Didn't Geller do a similar trick with Shipi Strang his 'prompter' in the audience?

Yes confirmation theres more going on there.

And when Rachel notices you did leave remember why you left.

Dont forget you can hang out here if you want. . . .

I believe I have my answer. Thank you to all concerned.

I'd love to see the e-mail you sent them that elicited this level of response. You said it was basically the same questions you're asking here (in which case, as others have pointed out, the knee-jerk response of this email was completely out of line...and highly suspicious), but I'd still like to see it, so we have as complete a picture as possible.

Another thought, for what it's worth. You said this 'secret society' was comprised of people who all have 'special abilities' but do not care for 'ostentacious' displays.

Why have such a society then? Or belong to one? Isn't that osententacious in its own way? It seems to me (solely opinion mind you) that it is more about reinforcing the idea that all involved are special, and propping up each other's beliefs in these abilities especially when they're not examined. And especially when minor questioning (as you stated your questions were in line with your posts here) ellicited such a blistering cultish response. No only no answers to reasonable questions, but a 'get out'?

Yeah, I think you got your answer alright. And I hope that you continue questioning.

Well, he had 50% chance of guessing right if he could see the colour but not the shape. But the beauty of playing cards is that the number cards are laid out in easily recognisable patterns, so that it is not necessary to count: you can see what number it is! Lanford definitely bummed.

Either he
  • intentionally introduced errors to hide his trickery
  • he misread signs from an accomplice
  • or he could no longer remember information he had surreptitiously acquired in some other way

YOU HAVE BEEN EXCOMMUNICATED. DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT COLLECT TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS.

Oh, is this thread all finished? I was quite enjoying it.

Come back Nolan - we won't kick you out for disagreeing with us or asking questions.

And I'd love to hear follow-up on this story.

It would be nice for Noland to say how he first got involved with this group and if he had to put up any money yet. This does sound like an attempt on the groups part to show potential group members that they do these expensive tests. These tests cost money, we need your support. The fact that he questioned the test at all demonstrates to the group, or at least Rachel, Noland probably isn't the type who will just hand over cash without asking a few questions. Probably best for him not to be involved in the group and spread this idea of asking questions. When I visit psychic chat rooms and ask questions, I'm often accused of being "a thinker" as if that is somehting to be ashamed of. There should be s sign on the door, "Check your brains here. The use of thought is strictly prohibited!!!"

I suppose it is possible that Nolan was hoping we'd reveal how this magic trick can be done. :(

I suppose it is possible that Nolan was hoping we'd reveal how this magic trick can be done.
We did. One easy method involves sneaking in at night and having a peek in the envelopes.
Not the most complex or elegant method, but it would work very well.

We'll suggest other methods if Nolan comes back and wants them.

I'll just come right out and say it - what a bitch! (can I say that?)
