Ted's PalTalk Debate Challenge

Well sorry you had to wear the "woo" title, nothing much I can control about that.

Paranormal topics arent discussed often because the room is highly social. We do more playing music, listening to Renata talk about how great the Lakers are, murderizing Johnno at chess, and joking around in the room than really talking about anything skeptical and paranormal-y.

(snipped)

Nope. We talk about bees. And only bees. We became a bee room. So, take your Laker-loving-chess beating- joking- skepticism elsewhere!

Should have said, "Buzz off."

T'ai Chi,

Please stop these incessant attempts at redirecting the conversation to your petty wars.

It was related to the point being made. Perhaps you and Bill should really back up your own claims, then I never would have brought it up.

T'ai Chi. you're emulating your opponent. Knock it off.

Oh, Ian... yoo hoo!

Frankly, I'd insist on not being the room administrator during this debate.

Scribble, have you ever watched the Psychic and Paranormal Debate Room in action? How would you characterize my behavior towards the believers I debate? Am I abusive? Do I call them names?

If anyone else has witnessed the P&P Debate Room in action, feel free to recount your experiences here, good or bad.

I've witnessed P&P Debate Room in action, and I have to say that TLN is a fine moderator. From what I've seen, he's strictly against abusive outbursts (dotting or booting as appropriate) and always responds calmly and rationally, explaining his viewpoint and giving supporting evidence.

Ok I need some info on when the debate room is actually active.
Room For Skeptics is up just about everyday, it gets exciting between 6 to 12 PM CST.

Psychic And Paranormal Debate Room usually fires up on weekends at about 8 PM and lasts through 8 AM CST.

At the moment (June 2, 2004 6:20 PM CST), you cannot sign on to PalTalk for the following reason:

Holy cow a paltalk thread and I missed it.

Clancie, as Mr. Skinny has said paltalk allows multiple user names so come on in (if you haven't already) and get a feel for the place.

Also be aware that "Room for Skeptics" is entirely different from the "Psychic and Paranormal Debate" room. I must add that TLN or Just Ted as he is now known is a fair and honest guy.

The debate room is open on an irregular basis, as it's a lot of work and emotionally draining (but in a good way :D). Look for an announcement on here when the debate room is open.

Actually we are looking for someone on the other side of the debate to co-moderate...hmmm....

Do you like bees by any chance?

Clancie has gone. Claus has chased her off the board.

Ian says he'll be joining me Wednesday 1:00 AM British Time. Bring popcorn.

Pity -I'd have stayed up late to listen.

You're not missing much, but then, I expect you know that.

I tried setting Ian straight the other night when he had popped in the regular room, but he's impervious to honest debate. Asked why he thinks consciousness survives death he pointed to the evidence of, get this, Near Death Experiences. When I explained to him that NDEs could be nothing more than hallucinations since we can produce them at will with perfectly healthy people who are not dying, he claimed that these aren't "proper" NDEs. Asked what the difference is he refused to answer because it's "not important."

Ian is not capable of honest debate because he sticks his head in the sand over any fact that has the possibility of shaking up his world view; just like the good little believer he is. That's great, but his strutting around this forum like he's everyone's superior is insufferable. He needs to be shunned like any other worthless troll, but of course, he won't be.

Liar. And of course I have never denied they could be hallucinations. So could my entire life. So what?

The fact that certain elements of NDEs can be reproduced is neither here nor there. It's simply not relevant. It just reinforces the idea that our experiences have their neural correlates. But it is absurd to suppose that experiences are therefore unreal. Otherwise we need to conclude everything we have ever experienced is an hallucination

Ian, is this correct?

  1. Did you answer the question of why consciousness survives death with "Near Death Experiences"? Just yes or no, please.
  2. Did you claim that the NDEs explained as nothing more than hallucinations are not "proper" NDEs? Just yes or no, please.
  3. Did you refuse to explain the difference because it is not important? Just yes or no, please.

Whatever you say, Ian.

Not "certain elements" Ian, NDEs.

Please explain the difference between a "genuine" NDE and an induced one. You can't.

Why not? Beacuse you say so? The mighty Ian has spoken!

Ian, just to be crystal clear, OK? Could you answer yes or no to each of the three questions?
