Tebow Time

I actually like Tebow and do think he's a "winner", although I admit that I have no idea how to quantify what that really means. My sense is that it's a confidence that pervades teammates (offense and defense) and raises all ships on the same tide. Regardless of whether he thinks the hand of god actually helps him play the game, Tebow is convinced that he's doing god's will by playing. When you think that god has ordained you to do something, you end up being pretty focused on doing that thing.

I've always despised the god-thanking in sport and other irrelevant facets of life. The Tebows at least walk the walk, rather than simply blather on about Jesus like so many hyper-Christians do. As nutty as I think they are, I have more respect for people like Tebow who actually do spend time doing missionary work rather than the loudmouths who spend their time lobbying to persecute homosexuals or scientists or muslims or whoever attracts their ire in the moment.

So no, Tebow doesn't bother me, I'm glad to see him having some success in the NFL, and I wish him well.

I'll give Tebow credit that he thanks his Lord even when he loses. Granted that may never happen again.

And he does seem like a very hard worker who isn't into hypocrisy. I have to respect that.

The word Tebowing has just been accepted as a new word and is defined as: getting down on a knee and praying even if everyone around you is doing something completely different.
By who? Paranoid/whiny atheists? I follow the NFL closely and never heard this term.

And I'll take that refreshingly brief act of humility over the obnoxious circus clown dances/etc many others do any day of the week and yes twice on Sundays. :) Although IMO the best thing to do after scoring is nothing at all. Just get your ass out of the end zone and to the sidelines.

Tim Tebow credits God and prayer for his wins.
No, more like he credits God with his God-given abilities that help him to win, at most.

I do understand that usually this is a general praise be to God statement by athletes.
Based on your above statement, sure doesn't sound like it.

Thoughts?
I think the anti-Tebow bit is as ridiculous as the anti-theist (mostly anti-Christian) bit.

PS how is this a "social issue?"

Wow, Red. Do you ever use Google?

And more. Some 727,000 more.

Maybe someone could quote and repost this. Either Red manually ignores me (can't blame him, not a fan) or uses the list. But it bugs me to see anyone say they never heard of something when Google can give you 3/4 a million hits on the word in a fraction of a second.

I have commented before on the the whole Tebow thing in the NFL thread, but what is more appropriate here is my take on his early life.

It would seem to me, without any profession of knowledge of what may be running through his head, that Mr T. Tebow has been brought up to believe he is a 'child of God'. A direct intervention by God has given us Tim, and bestowed this great talent (yeah he is talented, no doubt).

His mother was seriously ill (whilst working as a missionary) when pregnant and was advised to have an abortion to save her life, refused and low and behold, got better, baby was fine and Tim entered the world.

This makes me feel uncomfortable.

More specifically, uncomfortable with the...........the fun poking at him. There may be a deeper issue here - a whole 'nother ball game of raising kids in the religious way.

Personally, I love the guy, in a devout atheist way :P

B. I really want to smack the people who insist that Tebow should be rookie of the year over Dalton & Newton.

You might want to inform them that Tebow's not a rookie; this is his second season.

As to whether he can succeed long-term in the NFL, I have my doubts. A completion percentage below 50% is not a good indicator. Tebow has been able to stay on the field despite that low rate because a) he avoids the interceptions, b) he throws long passes so his yards per attempt is still reasonable, and c) his ability to run.

I do... I then get either a blank stare or "Well, he hasn't played 16 games yet! So he's still a rookie!" Sigh...

As Slingblade demonstrated, it's quite the common term; I follow the NFL closely and assure you I've heard of it. Sick of hearing it as a matter of fact.

PS: He's a running back, maybe a tight end. Or vice versa.

don't know much about a touchdown pass, don't know much about 'turf or grass

Here's what I posted yesterday in Sports

Denver's Offense:
With Orton starting: 1.7 pts per drive
With Tebow starting: 1.3 pts per drive

Denver's Defense
When Orton started: 2.4 pts per drive
Since Tebow has been starting: 1.3 pts per drive

Who's your savior?

(I put it on a per drive basis to control for the effect of a change in number of possessions; it has been claimed that because Denver is now running the ball all the time, that the opponents do not have as many opportunities to score; it is completely wrong, of course - Denver's offense is so bad that they give the opponents more chances to score (2.5 extra possessions per game) making what the defense has done even more impressive)
I don't know much about football, but what about looking at who has the ball most of the time? In other words, how much time is the defense spending on the field w/ versus w/o Tebow?

I'd wager more time with Tebow. The number of 3 and outs, and their 3rd down conversion rate, is pretty bad. At least in the first 55 or so minutes of any given game. Although their defense forces much of the same against the teams they play.

There's a lot of punting to watch when a team plays Denver.

I'm uncomfortable with the implication that God would choose to save a fetus so it could grow up to make millions playing a stupid, boring kid's game on TV.

Someone posted the story of this overcooked ham on my Facebook page this morning. Football's already a religion in this part of the US, did they need to spotlight an actual religion in the middle of it? It's compound suck.

I hate the guy, same as I hate every buffoon who spews his religion 24/7, especially when he has a national platform to do it from.
