TAM3 Confessions

I confess I never said Skepchick came from Skeptic magazine. And I swear I didn't schmooze the press to get mentioned. But, aside from that, Stacy and I did find ourselves seated at the lunch buffet next to a regular columnist for the Las Vegas Weekly, who was there to cover the convention. Which he LOVED, by the way!

What a welcome article after coming home to my daily newspaper which featured, on the FRONT page, at the TOP(!!)....a UA professor claiming some medium has been scientifically proven to be legit.

Anyway. Here's the article with the convention coverage.

I confess that the lure of the casino caused me to miss the Forum photo. :( No one seemed to know exactly when it was going to be taken when I asked earlier in the day.

I confess happiness and pride that kitty trusted me enough to show her the slot machines and what to do if she wanted to play. And Eos, too, actually...
:o :D Yes, and we trusted you all the more when you won :)
Then I seemed to break that spell...:( I'll never live that down!!

Kitty, next time you will have MLynn all to yourself so you can win something.

MLynn, you may have missed one single picture taking, but the memories will never be forgotten. I have saved many of the photos taken already, and am glad you were there for most! Here's to the best roomie ever :) Cheers!

Her friend Melissa is more a wave mechanics kind of girl: the well-breasted blonde wears a tight T-shirt bearing a joke about Schrödinger's cat, a thought experiment that explains issues dealt with in quantum theory. Even though we are at a conference, The Amazing Meeting 3, that's packed with professors, scientists, mathematicians and incredibly well-informed magicians, for some reason Melissa has to keep explaining Schrödinger's cat to guys at the conference.

Awesome! And your explaining shows how valuable skepchick contributions are! Brains and beauty, you are soooo cool DR!

But no pic :( No pic of a skepchick, not even your shirt. Sigh.
Sigh. That would have been one for the scrapbook.

Ah well, good for you, and for being such an amazing skepchick! Initiated and everything :)

Hey duppyraces, thanks for posting that link. I think that's one of the better articles I'vce seen covering the conference. Probably because it's the only one I've seen, but still pretty good.

I think the journalist was looking for a transition to talking about Skeptic Magazine, and made up the part of the Skepchick name to help in the transition. I hope Shermer doesn't mind :D

And I do think the T-shirt needed explaining. I had to explain what subluxations were to an educated looking man that was telling a group of people that he thought "subluxation" was just a different term for something that does really exist. Hmph. Like "subluxation" means "neural pathway" or something...NOT!!
I hope he learned to look things up at least.

After their description of you, they have the nerve to run the photos they did?

:nope:
LOL. It's as it should be, because it's not about me, it's about the conference! I was just relieved to see a mainstream entertainment publication (or is it seedy? I'm not familiar with the LV Weekly) post positively on a skeptic event without having to put in quotes from psychics or cite "proven" paranoramal studies. Guess it helps that the writer is a skeptic. ;)

I think you're right, as I think the first paragraph was to generate Las Vegas male reader interest.

I thought so too. I actually said I was thrilled and surprised at how many people DID know what it meant, to which I do believe my friend quipped "I'm surprised so many don't." Ah well. I'm off to look up subluxation. :D

Actually, dups, I guess I was basing my comment on the style of writing. As you say, the opening paragraph was a lure for a broader audience. The style seemed to me to be much more, say, Rolling Stone than Wall Street Journal, and as such, I honestly expected a pic to go along with that paragraph.

On second thought...perhaps that is exactly the reason--run the description in paragraph 1, with a pic not of said skepchicks...and hope that the reader peruses the whole article in hopes of a later picture...

Whatever. Nice article, and thanks for the link!

Chiros claim the nerves in the vertebrae can be "misaligned" by the vertebrae...
This interferes with the normal flow of energy along the nerve fibers. Messages traveling along the nerves will be distorted. If the full, normal energy flow cannot pass to and from the brain, some part of the body will be adversely affected.

http://www.worldchiropracticalliance.org/consumer/subluxation.htm

Causing distorted messages? Ahem. They expect us to believe this? Really. *rolls eyes*

If the spine could be misaligned as they described, then we'd all be in big trouble all the time. Good thing this is completely untrue.

I know. And funny you should say that about the style, because the writer, Richard (who turned out to be way cool and a lot of fun to talk to) also writes for Rolling Stone. In any case, I just didn't want to seem like I was posting it to say, hey! Look at me! And besides, while slipping Richie $50 to have my name mentioned and $100 for the compliments, I couldn't afford the $500 he wanted to put my picture in there. I mean, jeez....I thought if I had sex with the guy...

Ah well. Live and learn.

Thanks for the expanded definition. The regular dictionary just says it means partial dislocation of a bone in a joint. That is too funny. I'll have to tell my chiropractor.

Hey, you could have passed a hat around....

I confess that I am sorry that at the skepchick party, they threw Phil Plait out, but let me stay. Yes. I truly feel badly about that, Phil, really I do. Really. Trust me.

I also apologize for all the groping I did during the picture. I apologize to whoever's leg that was (wait, it was mine? dang.)

I do not apologize for trying to be more social, and hugging everyone. I still feel kinda wierd doing it, but I think it's better that I be less standoffish, eh?

really phil. So sorry. All those smart beautiful women, and me. Dang.

Richard is really awesome. I spent a lot of the conference kicking around with him in the back. I bought a Nabokov hardcover from under him and we started talking books. He actually drove home to give me a book he was telling me about - just gave it to me. What a sweetheart.

Great mention, DR!!

I'll meet you in the Science threads girl! Oh, ask your chiro about Tim Bolen ;)

I dunno, my nerves sent me all sorts of distorted messages when I was around you...but I think that was because you're a married woman and nothing at all to do with my spine. ;)

duppy and Eos! Hey great job representing the skepchicks! Hey, we aren't all middle aged white men! Thanks!:D

Well, we do have messages flowing via the spine, but the way chiros describe subluxations, we all should be very easily disrupted when we're not (and they go on about woo things like "energy"). You'd have to break your back etc. to have what they call subluxations happen. Back in the day DD Palmer claims to have cured somebody's deafness by improving the energy flow by fixing a subluxations. What a bunch of gobbleygook. But they didn't know much back then, and they still don't change their edumacation with new information. Like I said though, I should take this to the science forums.

I enjoyed you very much Shane, you're a sweetie, and can dance, but you're tall :p :D

kitty, I can't take any credit representing the skepchicks to the media, but DR, Moe, and others like Stacy have done a great job :) I didn't talk to any Reporters, and felt I should avoid them since lack of sleep messes with my brain. Not the sort of representation that we need, lol.

I have a confession to make. When I was sitting next to Eos at the hottub, trying to explain the uncertainty principle and some of its consequences to her, I spent pretty much the entire time staring at her legs.

Which just goes to show, I do not have a one-track mind. It is two-track. I can think about two completely different subjects at once, as long as one of them is sex. :D
