TAM 9 Dates

My point had more to do with TAM than with DragonCon, in case that wasn't clear. I did not attend DCon and don't plan to. Nothing against it.. it's just not my thing, that's all.

Bottom line IMO: TAM should be the Amazing Meeting, not the Amazing Convention. I think that is in keeping with the spirit of what TAM was intended to be. And it's nonsense to think limiting attendance will stymie the progress of the skeptical movement.

If you're concerned about the growth of the skeptical movement, why not ask yourself how you are helping. Are you actively involved in your local community of skeptics/critical thinking groups? Or is it possible you really don't do much more than sit on your ass in front of your computer commenting and complaining on skeptical blogs and forums?

Yikes! What's with you?

If that was directed at my response to your post--In answer to your two "questions," in order--Yes and No. Please don't assume otherwise before asking.

GenCon (26,000 - 30,000) gives you the opportunity to have badge and all tickets mailed to you for pre-registered events. I always choose this option and NEVER stand in line. And if you really want special service you get the VIG badge and your own lounge to hang out in with the ability to register for stuff in the lounge itself.

I wonder how GenCon handles any counterfeiting issues. I for one would gladly pay to have a special lounge. :)

I think for the next D*C I attend, I'll probably just buy the ticket on the day itself. More expensive but you avoid most of the wait.

No, really, counterfeiting has been a significant problem in past years. Mailing out badges ahead of time would just give them more time to make a decent copy and put the images online for others to download.

I don't even want it mailed - I want to pick it up when I check into my hotel, right at the hotel desk. THAT would be ideal.

That is probably the best idea. There are 5-6 "official" hotels, right? So you pick up your badge when you check in. Anyone counterfeiting a badge would have to pick a hotel they were "staying" in. For more coverage, expand the "official" list to 10-15. Anyone who is not staying at one of these hotels would pick their badge up at the convention center.

I believe the printing process they use and the use of hologram stickers on the badges solve the counterfeiting. I did the VIG one year and the special lounge is nice, but the benefits of the program did not justify the expense. You don't have to be a VIG to get your badge & tickets mailed to you, anyone can, you just need to order before a particular date. Pre-reg & getting gaming event tickets in advance are rather important at GenCon as games can easily be filled if you don't. Not sure that DragonCon needs the level of advanced ticketing that GenCon has. GenCon is pretty good at handling crowds for registration and will call, but the lines with a crowd that size can still be quite long and I am happy I get to walk past them to putter about and find friends on the day I arrive there.

I-con has used hologram stickers on badges for several years that have solved counterfeiting issues, but I-con does not mail badges either.

Dragon*Con does use holographic layers in the printing of their badges. But, I heard that, every year, there are counterfeit ones floating around, anyway. Either someone with inside information is corrupt, or someone has the technology to dupe the holographic badge printing process rather quickly, or something.

They have already told we Directors that they are changing the badge process next year to help these issues.

But, this is what happens when something just kicks THAT much ass. :)

I've run into problems twice with I-CON's badges. A few years ago they didn't open the pre-reg admission until an hour after they said they would (I asked specifically when they would open, and got an email back saying "8 a.m."). Of course you couldn't get in to the 0900 events without a badge. This year there was an hour-long line. I wish they would mail badges.

DAMN, PEOPLE. Every time I see this thread has been updated I think, "Oh, maybe they announced dates." Then I come in here and you're still talking about badges.

And not even TAM badges.

TAM Badges are already cool. They don't need talking about.

Although, I assume they could, eventually, use some sort of holographic system to prevent counterfeiting

I'd be willing to experiment with some counterfeit badges to force them to make super-awesome holographic ones.

Anyone else feel a strange compulsion to come to this thread and update it, just to make everyone else think that dates have been announced?
