Merged So Ebola's back......

Ebola clinics in Liberia looted?

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-28841040#

Oh dear. Does anyone know why these idiots broke into these Ebola clinics? Don't they know that they've likely signed their own death warrants and endangered countless others by carrying off infected people and bloody bedsheets, etc? Wow...

I have heard this is due to the equivalent of the African version of anti-vaxxers, but I've yet to see confirmation of that claim.

Is it going to get so bad that some parts of Liberia will literally have to be walled off until the infection passes? Ugh :boggled:

Yeah, stupidity.

From what I can gather there is a mix of thinking ebola is a hoax being used to milk the country of its resources, and anger that ebola patients from other countries are being treated there [checks article - yep].

It was really, amazingly stupid. But, rampaging crowds aren't known for their nuanced decision making.

TL;DR they think it's a hoax

From what I have read, the rioters broke in because they believe that the disease is actually "just" malaria and the government is lying to them to get money.

Holy cow. It'll be interesting to see their reasoning (or lack thereof) when the Ebola starts to spread throughout the region unchecked, assuming they live that long.

What about reports that sections of Liberia are being closed off for purposes of containment? Is there anything to that, or is it a rumor?

ETA: I found confirmation on the containment question. It's true that certain regions are simply being sealed off. This article says these tactics haven't been used in over a century - spooky: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/13/s...tries-cordon-off-ebola-racked-areas.html?_r=0

Well, to be fair to the Liberians, from what I understand of their government, it is terribly corrupt and has a history of civil rights abuse. So when the government steps in and says "let us handle this situation" I don't suppose I can blame some for not immediately trusting the government.

But damn, the price they're going to pay... good gravy, it's going to be a nightmare.

It is tragically sad that in the 21st century many of the planet's people remain so uninformed.
We don't owe these people our scorn.
We owe them an education.

They're not mutually exclusive - we can try both!

I'm reminded of the folks who loudly complained about the two US workers with ebola being brought to Emory in Atlanta for treatment. How many more would have joined the chorus, and maybe even actively protested, had it been two brown foreigners instead?

Nonsense. I heap scorn upon my students all the time, and it helps them learn.

Or the anti-vax and similar nutes in the "developed" world.

Good. Not as effective as flogging but it works.

There is some reason to believe that "traditional" herbal healing methods, mixed with greed, were partially responsible for the death toll in the current Ebola outbreak. Link.

The outbreak need never have spread from Guinea, health officials revealed to AFP, except for a herbalist in the remote eastern border village of Sokoma.

“She was claiming to have powers to heal Ebola. Cases from Guinea were crossing into Sierra Leone for treatment,” Mohamed Vandi, the top medical official in the hard-hit district of Kenema, told AFP.

“She got infected and died. During her funeral, women around the other towns got infected.”

Other news.

  • There are problems with the quaranties in Liberia. Troops have fired on crowds.
  • There are multiple suspected cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the first time in this epidemic.
  • Nancy Writebol and Kent Brantly are expected to be released from hospital today.
  • Death toll is now 1,361.
  • There is a suspected Ebola case in Sacramento.

West Point? This is potentially getting very ugly, then. That's a major, major slum.

According to demagogues interviewed on Faux News, Honduran children dressed as Osama bin Laden are straining their cantaloupe sized legs under the strain of carrying Ebola into the American Heartland.

Be scared! Be VERY scared!

SCARED! BOO! RUN! GITCHERGUN!

That's impossible. If all the Honduran children die from Ebola, how can Obama use them for medical research?

Watching that video was possibly the most frightening 53:30 minutes of my life.

Yeah, glad someone else feels the same way I did.

I'm reduced to saying...that ****'s ********** up. Nothing but expletives.

Oh yeah, General Butt Naked. I read about him before I went to see The Book of Mormon a couple weeks ago.

I may have to watch that documentary now.
