Judge Rules: Sheriff Joe Arpaio engaged in racial profiling, violating the Constitutional rights of Latinos

Although Sheriff Joe said that racial profiling was not the case, U.S. District Court Judge Murray Snow said in a written ruling, ”The great weight of the evidence is that all types of saturation patrols at issue in this case incorporated race as a consideration into their operations.”

Reuters reports, “U.S. District Court Judge Murray Snow ruled that the sheriff’s policies violated the drivers’ constitutional rights and ordered his office to cease using race or ancestry as a grounds to stop, detain or hold occupants of vehicles – some of them in crime sweeps dubbed “saturation patrols.”

AZCentral reports, “The evidence introduced at trial establishes that, in the past, the MCSO has aggressively protected its right to engage in immigration and immigration–related enforcement operations even when it had no accurate legal basis for doing so,” Show said.”

Snow added that race had factored into which vehicles the deputies decided to stop, and into who they decided to investigate for immigration violations.

I live in Southern California (a poor area) an area with lots and lots of latinos. My landlord is latino. My daughter's boyfriend is latino. Most of my neighbors are latino. There's no mystery here. Not every latino has features representative of the normal distribution of latinos but there is a normal distribution.

In a room of one hundred random people can you pick out the ones who are Latino?

Of course, on average they have darker skin, dark eyes and dark hair. The normal distribution of latinos have features that are slightly different than white anglo saxons.

These are of course generalizations. I could easily fail the outliers but there will be a normal distribution of those who are mostly European dissent and those of Latin American dissent.

Gather them up. Make it random. I'm happy to take that challenge.

Race is a sketchy thing and it's not my purpose to defend it. However, there are superficial differences between blacks, Asians and Europeans. Latin America was largely conquered by Spain and Portugal. Unlike North America those to the south including Mexico tended to mix with their conquerors. However, their features, dark hair, dark eyes, dark hair, are dominant and remain predominant as the normal distribution of superficial differences.

If 53% are white then 47% are not. The sheriff only need go after the 47% and ignore the whites. What percentage of People born in Latin America are white?

The judge ruled that the sheriff profiles Latinos on sight. Not that he(they) profile a particular race. Bring together 100 whites, blacks, mixed raced, Asians, Native Americans, Hawaiians, etc., some Latinos some not and the sheriff can pick out the Latinos.

I can walk outside and spot a latino. Are you saying it's impossible to pick out most of the 47% of non-white latinos? Seriously?
