Split Thread Scottish Independence

I disagree. In fact I think this illustrates the problem which frustrates so many

The UK parliament is NOT the english parliament. If they wish to have an english parliament there is nothing to stop them and it seems to me to make a lot of sense.

Apparently they do not want one, however. I have no idea why not. But while we have a UK parliament I see no case for treating MP's from one part of the UK differently from any others.

The implicit assumption is that the UK parliament and the English parliament are one and the same: and that is one of the things which really annoys a lot of Scottish and Welsh (and probably Northern Irish people for all I know)

The Labour government did try to introduced "devolved" powers for regions in England (which I think would have been an excellent idea) but it did not prove popular with "the people". A damned shame, I think a formally federated state should be the future for this country.

Then it is a national issue then?

...snip...

Put it this way - consider that the whole of the UK population except those resident in Scotland took place in a referendum to decide on the future of Scotland - would you consider that fair?

No, that would be yours. What other words should I use to describe them?

Do you have a derogatory one I could use to reinforce your prejudice?

The UK is not composed of "England" and "Scotland", that you equate anything to do with the UK that is not Scotland as being "the English" shows your prejudice in regards to the English.

What prejudice have I shown in this exchange?

Like with East Anglia and the Midlands with their own 'Governor' as it is in America? Interesting idea.

Sort of - I'd try to arrange the splits to reflect geography and population density so we end up with regions of probably in the region of say 10 million, so bung up the likes of Northumberland and Cumberia with Scotland, which would make sense in terms of shared history, culture and facing similar issues - such as sparsely populated rural areas.

I'd almost say look at it the other way, what shouldn't be devolved, start from scratch rather than trying to cobble together something from what we have now. I think the German model looks very interesting.

Would each 'states' be able to set their own minimum wage for example?

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember you claiming North Eastern English heritage for yourself, in which case I'm stunned you could write something so profoundly wrong. Did you never read The Dandy when you were young?

They didn’t try very hard. We had a vote up here although the only publicity for it was given by the “Vote No” campaign.

I think it was only Me and the bloke wanting to get Stottie Cakes recorded with protected geographic indicator status who voted Yes.

Dodge.

You need it to be that dont you? I have no prejudice against the English.

Dodge what - I've tried to explain my views to you in a different way.

What do I need you to be prejudice against England for? And since you repeatedly try to frame the discussion as "Scotland v England" I am quite sure that you do have a prejudice in this matter towards England. If not you would not keep making such statements, as I responded above if you remove Scotland from the UK you are not left with England.
