Santorum is Dropping Out

Yes well. Hell yes way.

He may have been "for more likely to lose to Obama," but that would still give him a small chance of winning. In in my book, a nonzero chance of a "President Santorum" is way too *********** high.

This. An unforeseen economic downturn could have led to something even more frightening: President Santorum :boggled:

And this might set him up to be the nominee is 2016. If Romney loses in 2012, then the Republican base might say that he was not conservative enough to win the election, so they vote for a "real" conservative in 2016, which might be Santorum. Then "the true conservative" loses in 2016 to whomever the Democrats run that year and the Republican party finally has to realize that running to the extreme far right of their base isn't working for them and starts to swing back to the middle again. They've got to do something to reach out to minority voters and get them into the fold because the old, white Republican guard is dying off.

In the words of Emily LaTella (sp?) - "It could happen!"

I hope you're right.

Please tell me he actually said that.

What an idiot.

His daughter is really beating the odd. Edward's syndrome is really evil.

Poor little sausage, she will be lucky to make it to ten years of age.

I didn't know that about his daughter or her condition. But if that's really the case, it's one more thing that makes him a complete douchebag in my book. He has a daughter who will be lucky to see seven more years, and he's angling to spend a minimum of four of those years (and hopefully eight) in the most high-stress, attention-demanding job in the country? And yet he's Mister Family Values Guy?

Even if I agreed with him on the issues, I still wouldn't want someone in that position as president, because I think dealing with a tragedy like losing a young daughter would rather put a crimp in one's ability to do the job effectively. Knowingly putting himself in that position would be grossly unfair to both his family and the country.

(Apologies if I'm repeating stuff that others have already ranted about, but that I've managed to miss.)

I will give Santorum one piece of credit. He didn't waffle and say crap like "I'm going to reassess my options" or "I'll still be a player, just more in the background"

Umm...

Race over, but Santorum vows to keep fighting

"We made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race for us is over for me and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting," Santorum said during his speech in Gettysburg. "We will continue to fight for those voices for those Americans who stood up and gave us that air under our wings."

Slightly less weasely than the others, but still not what I'd call a clean exit.

(Then again, I suppose a clean exit isn't exactly what he's known for.)

Say what you will, but now I'm forever deprived of the headline I want to see this November:

Little Ricky did not endorse Romney.

My guess is that Little Ricky will eventually endorse Mitt by applying the cowardly "Anybody But Obama" model.

Santorum won Kansas and the local news said he hasn't released his delegates.
What does it do to Romney if he keeps them until the convention?

Santorum can use them as leverage for any number of favors from speaking at the convention to a cabinet position or even VP pick.

Santorum as VP candidate makes the republican ticket unthinkable to vote for for me. An assassination, heart attack or whatever makes him president if Romney wins. I've thought VP nomination might be what he's really angling for from the beginning. One would hope that the Republicans would have learned something from the Palin debacle, but they have shown little sign of being able to learn lately.

I don't really see Romney offering Santorum the VP spot unless he desperately needs those delegates. There are other "true conservatives" that will be less distasteful to swing voters, if Romney feels that he needs one on the ticket. Barring a resurgence of Newt, as the last remaining non-Romney, I think Romney will have enough delegates locked up by the convention that he won't have to make any ill-advised deals with Santorum.

Thanks you. I should have made that point. Agreed.

Health and Human Services.

I am not saying he is qualified, I am saying he thinks he is qualified.

No, Santorum is not going to be on the short list for anything. He wouldn't even endorse Romney with his departure speech. I've seen a lot of the Religious Right say that if they can't get a religious conservative, they won't vote for Romney, and Santorum is doing nothing (so far) to discourage this attitude. Mitt and Rick really don't like each other.
